30 Days of Photos IV - Day 27 - NSEW

North, South, East, West.

The four corners of the world.

The four points of a compass.

The four directions of a weather vane.

Oddly enough it has nothing to do with N.E.W.S.

And I always thought it did.

I could have sworn seeing a newscast when I was a kid with an opening with the letters N E W S spinning out from behind a rotating globe.

I went to You Tube to see if I could find it but alas I couldn't. What I did find was a short clip from one of my favourite movies, Network...

Yeah that's exactly how I felt not being able to find the clip.

Anyhoo.

Turns out news is a 14th century word that is merely the plural of "new".

Oh well at least I covered all the bases with my picture.

It's a shot  of the Market Media Mall, a building in the local Byward Market that houses several TV and radio outlets.

Above the building is a broadcasting tower and at the very tip is a weather vane.

So whether it's NEWS or NSEW, I've got it!

Blow on over to Ziva's Inferno to see which direction everyone else took today. I'm sure hilarity will ensue...or NSEW.

Aren't we clever bright and early this morning?

You know, I'm sure we had something very similar for the opening of our news back in the day.

I don't think I'm making this up. I'm sure I saw it as a kid. Oh, well. The mind is the first thing to go.

I'm bummed that you couldn't find that clip, too. I trust that you saw it because it's such an iconic image from the days when the big networks actually DID broadcast world news. (Still giggling about Shawn's comment.)

Good Morning. The NEWS rotating around a globe was at The Daily Planet where Clark Kent worked. I think?

Shawn knows how to "dish" it doesn't he?
nonamedufus said…
I don't think that's what I was thinking of, 54.

Very creative take on the theme today and I always feel like I'm a little more knowledgeable after reading your posts.
nonamedufus said…
Wow, thanks, Nora. I was going to photograph my cat with it's legs splayed in 4 different directions but decided to go this route instead.

I recently watched Broadcast News again. I love it!

Your stories are always so interesting and entertaining. You are a great source of news or lots of new information.
nonamedufus said…
Ya think? It's not too late for the cat.
nonamedufus said…
Well, I like to add context to help you guys understand where the photos come from.

You're very thorough, Dufus, covering all the bases with your picture. I like that in a man.

It was a twofer, just to ensure success. It was a NEWS outlet. And over the building was a weathervane with N.E.W.S. I was lucky.

I'm so glad you didn't go the splayed cat route. Sigh. I like the tower.

I will check out Broadcast News.

Damn, Broadcast News is good too, but I meant Network and have since changed the reference. I'm still thinking of the splayed cat. There's still a couple of days to go.

I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore. Great movie, and in a way, probably the predecessor to Jeff Daniels' character on The Newsroom, although i haven't watched it even though Ziva keeps telling me how great it is. I don't have HBO, and I can't get my wife to rent it with me.

What were talking about?

Oh, interesting photo and story, NoName. I wish you'd found what you were looking for.

He's dialed in to your wavelength.
nonamedufus said…
Are you kidding? I love The Newsroom. It may have something to do with having spent 10 years in broadcast journalism. I can't get enough of this show. You've got to get HBO or the DVDs.

What were we talking about?

Now you've given me an ear worm of that U2 song. Thanks, Mike.
nonamedufus said…
Just what kind of signal are you sending me?

That's one big ass weathervane. Nicely reported, D.

"So whether it's NEWS or NSEW, I've got it!" -- You sure did! And ya did done good!

That's one way of describing it.
That's news to me. I'm a bit behind. Guess I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D
