Tears continued to drip from his moist eyes, rolled down his cheeks and fell to the pages below.  He loved to read. He read several books a week. But never had he come across such a text as was currently before him. It was such a sad tale, about a woman in the last throws of cancer. The funny thing was she was strong while all those around her were so broken-hearted and weak. Page after page reminded him of her. And his heart ached all over gain. There had been happy days together, sure, but at the news of her fatal disease his sunny skies had clouded over. And she had been the strong one not him. Jerry and Beth lay on their backs in the tall grass, the sun shining down on their little piece of heaven on earth. They were looking at the clouds as they skidded across an ocean blue sky. Summer holidays were drawing to a close and the teenage couple were taking it easy; thoughts of their Grade 10 classroom the furthest thing from their minds. It had been an enchanting summer for them both. Enchanting was Beth's word. Jerry would never have come up with it. Nice would be about as inventive as Jerry could be. Nevertheless the two were basking in the sunshine and each other's company as they had most days during this summer of firsts. This was Jerry and Beth's first relationship. They'd gone on a first date to a forgettable film spending more time gazing into each others eyes than at the screen. And they'd experienced their first kiss. It's All About Me!

I'm facing a dilemma. (That's dilemma, not dill enema.) My darling wife doesn't want to do anything special for Valentine's Day. I asked her if she'd like to go out for dinner. Thoughtful, right? Actually a tapas restaurant sent me an e-mail suggesting I make a reservation for Valentine's. Some years I'll completely forget about the day of love until it's too late. Thanks to that tapas restaurant, though, this year I was way ahead of myself. But no, my beloved isn't interested in going out. Okay. So I'll save some money on skipping a romantic dinner. And besides, when you think about it what is Valentine's Day all about anyway. The guy - or guys - it was named after was killed. Yep. There were 3 guys all named Valentine and they were martyred.
