30 Days of Photos IV - Day 19 - Never

Canned peas?

Never!

My dear departed mother used to make what she called tuna casserole for the family when I was a kid. Usually every Friday because like the good Catholics that we were we didn't eat meat on Friday.

It consisted of Kraft Dinner (mac and cheese to you Americans) tuna and an additional ingredient: canned peas.

Why? I don't know. She didn't call it Tuna and Pea Casserole.

Me, I'd eat the KD and the tuna but I hated vegetables, especially peas, I'd spit the peas into my glass of milk while pretending to drink it. Clever, eh?

I hated canned peas.

Still do to this day. And I haven't had KD since my university days when I'd round out my nutritional requirements with fried bologna.

I won't even eat them in her memory. Sorry, Mom.

This picture is of French peas or pois.

In Quebec grocery stores they usually turn the labels French side out.

But they can't fool me.

No matter what language they use they're still in that damn can.

Head on over to the Inferno where Ziva never stops sharing everyone else's photos.

I HATE peas. HATE. I was be force fed them as a kid.

I'm with you Shawn. And I, too, had a terrible childhood experience involving peas that affected me forever.

Blech! To each his own.

Those and canned lima beans - ugh!

I'm not a bog fan of canned peas either. *gags*
nonamedufus said…
Oh, geez, I could write another post about never eating lima beans. Yuck.
nonamedufus said…
They're the worst.

I don't like tinned anything much, except I will eat soup that comes from a tin sometimes. Oh, and baked beans. We mostly eat fresh everything. My mum always cooked fresh. Maybe that's why.
Ziva said…
Yum, peas! Don't worry, though, when you come visit, I won't make you eat any.

Oddly enough I love pea soup. But hate peas.
nonamedufus said…
The Finnish are big on peas are they?

My mother also used to make tuna casserole when I was a kid. Peas and tuna fish shouldn't be in the same room, let alone the same dish. Yuck!

Haha! I'm saw your comment about liking pea soup but not canned peas. Me, too! Yeah, and canned peas in tuna casserole made with a macaroni and cheese dinner? Ew.

You have nothing to fear from this station. Canned vegetables are not ever on the menu. I don't "do" canned almost anything, (unless we count the occasional can of beer).
nonamedufus said…
I couldn't agree more. You'll get no quarrel from me, Lauren.

My mom used to make "Tuna Pea-Wiggle" on Fridays when my dad was away hunting or fishing. It had tuna and peas in a white cream sauce that we poured over Saltines (salted soda crackers to you). I hated those damn peas. Love baby peas now but never from a can. Whenever the oldest of my brothers is sick, my mom whips up some TPW for him. Got him through bladder cancer treatment earlier this year. Since it's incurable and he works in a high-risk industry, he's likely to have treatments for the rest of his life and as long as mom is alive, he'all also have TPW.
nonamedufus said…
Now that's a canned good I can manage, Linda.

I think I'd do everything in my power to wiggle out of having to eat Tuna Pea-Wiggle, Cheryl.

Hm....I just realized that Mom used to make it with Cream of Mushroom soup. We didn't get even get mac & cheese!

I totally agree; canned (tinned, here in England) are an abomination! Fresh peas are delicious, but only raw. The ONLY peas to eat cooked are frozen peas, and even then all I do is bring the water to the boil, throw the peas in, and when it comes back to the boil, they're done!

Tinned (canned) peas? Nasty, nasty things!
nonamedufus said…
I like cream of mushroom soup. But how can anyone spoil it by throwing in canned peas?
nonamedufus said…
I can see I'm on the side of the angels here. The majority of you agree with my take on canned peas. If only my mother were alive!

This post sounds and looks familiar to me.

We have a lot in common, but I love peas. With gravy. And mashed potatoes.

The Finnish are big on anything edible. Food is hard to find in a land that's buried under snow and ice 10 months out of the year.

But they're full of delicious iron.

I've talked about my dislike for peas before.

And it probably won't be the last time, either.

I could care less. Blech.

I never eat any canned vegetables. Vegetables don't grow in cans. Yuck.
Whitey said…
Oh come on. It wasn't your nose they came out of. Or mine. So I consider it a positive experience.
nonamedufus said…
Jackal, are you okay?
nonamedufus said…
I send all mine to the starving children in China.
nonamedufus said…
Yeah after I spit them in my milk and then drank it sometimes they did. Don't you remember?

I'm with you on the peas, Dufus! I won't eat green peas in the can or fresh. Now black-eyed peas are another story. A delicious Southern story. I would have hated your house on Fridays. I don't drink milk, I don't like tuna casserole and I won't eat peas. It would have been a peanut butter day for me!
AH HA HA HA HA I AM DYING!!! My mother ate every vegetable she was given as a child. She had excellent grades. She was a well behaved Catholic girl. And yet her mother MADE her eat peas. To this day, she HATES peas. The canned peas, as she says, pop in your mouth and green goo comes out!
Traci Shannon said…
I am right there with you. My mom made that exact casserole and at the end of each meal, there was a line of the offending green peas.

nonamedufus said…
Oh, yuck. You had to go there. Now I'll have that image stuck in my head all day.

It's been an overwhelming vote against canned peas. Am I hangin' with the right people or what?

I totally agree with you!!

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D

My Back Pages - November

I know, I know, I know I should have reported in before now. But sometimes real life just gets in the way. I attempted 5 books in November. I say attempted because I slapped a big DNF (did not finish) on Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. I just can't seem to get into this guy. It's the second or third of his I've given up on, Not so the other four, starting with a biography of Stephen Stills called Change Partners. This followed by a hilarious biography of the guy responsible for National Lampoon called A Stupid and Futile Gesture - How Doug Kenney and National Lampoon Changed Comedy Forever. I ended the month reading yet another biography, this one of the man behind Rolling Stone magazine,. It was called Sticky Fingers: The Life and Times of Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine. A fascinating read. So last month I hit the magic number 50 I'd imagined for myself back in January. If I roll this month into my yearly total I'm at 54 books. And I still hav
