30 Days of Photos - Day 15 - China

In October of 2010, a Chinese Imperial Archway was completed in Ottawa to mark the entrance to the city's Chinatown.

The structure is part of a twin cities project between Ottawa and Beijing.

Ottawa's Chinatown is full of Chinese businesses such as grocery stores and restaurants.

It has the best Dim Sum I've ever tasted.

Ziva's got her linky thingy going so you can see how other folks have interpreted today's theme.

That's some fancy archway. When does the emperor arrive?

With a name like Hu Flung Dung, we're not sure we want to invite him.

Oh, Ottawa has a big oriental gate now too, eh? We have one here in Edmonton and of course Vancouver does too. Beautiful, aren't they?

I would love to have a China town where we live. One of the downsides of living in the country, I suppose.

Is there going to be a Canada Gate in Beijing ? ;-)
One of my best experiences in a Chinese Restaurant was in Ottawa. I forget the name now, it was 9 years back !

They are quite ornate. I believe Toronto has one too.

Chinatown is an amazing place. The market/grocery stores are fascinating.

Jaffer, my friend, long time no see. I hope you're doing well. You pose an interesting question. I really don't know the answer. But that would be neat.

And yes, there are some great Chinese restaurants here.

Sacramento has a Chinatown but it is only one city block and dead as a doornail.

Little Italy gives Chinatown a run for its money here in Ottawa. There are many great Italian restaurants which we often frequent.

I love me some Dim Sum.

Evil Twin wants to rappel down that archway!

Damn, I should've asked you to come over with some takeout.
nonamedufus said…
I took this while driving. I should have gotten out and gotten closer but you get the idea.
nonamedufus said…
I could do that. But I'll expect a good tip.
Ziva said…
You'll get to have dinner with me, isn't that enough of a tip? ;)

I just needed to hear you say it.

Now I am craving Chinese food. Sadly there is no Chinatown in Kansas City.
nonamedufus said…
I can send you some, Cheryl.

Oh, cool. Now I want to see more photos of Chinatown and the food. There aren't many Chinatowns in Texas. :(

We don't seem to do Chinatowns in the way they're done in America and Canada. I think there's one in London though.
nonamedufus said…
I'll drop by after I've been to Cheryl's in Kansas City.
nonamedufus said…
Yeah I think you guys are big on Indian food, aren't you?

Can you get cream of sum yung gai there?

It's funny we have many China tea cups and saucers and I never thought to take a picture of them.
nonamedufus said…
I'm not sure I'd want to.
nonamedufus said…
I don't know. I never stopped to think about it. Next time.

It looks like something blew in from China and landed there. Awesome shot.

Cool. We got a couple of similar archways. I couldn't help but notice that Raw Sugar place. We don't have one of those.
nonamedufus said…
I'm ashamed of him.
nonamedufus said…
It looks a little out of place, doesn't it.
nonamedufus said…
Yeah, I don't know what that is. Truth be told I took that shot leaving Chinatown not entering it.

Yum! Best food I ever had was in Chinatown -- it was the Chinatown in San Francisco but still.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D

My Back Pages - November

I know, I know, I know I should have reported in before now. But sometimes real life just gets in the way. I attempted 5 books in November. I say attempted because I slapped a big DNF (did not finish) on Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. I just can't seem to get into this guy. It's the second or third of his I've given up on, Not so the other four, starting with a biography of Stephen Stills called Change Partners. This followed by a hilarious biography of the guy responsible for National Lampoon called A Stupid and Futile Gesture - How Doug Kenney and National Lampoon Changed Comedy Forever. I ended the month reading yet another biography, this one of the man behind Rolling Stone magazine,. It was called Sticky Fingers: The Life and Times of Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine. A fascinating read. So last month I hit the magic number 50 I'd imagined for myself back in January. If I roll this month into my yearly total I'm at 54 books. And I still hav
