30 Days of Photos - Day 28 - Lover

In Ottawa, the Corktown pedestrian bridge spans the Rideau Canal linking the city's Somerset Street with Ottawa University.

Since it's completion in September of 2006, the bridge has become famous worldwide.

Why?

Local lovers have taken to demonstrate their love for one another by attaching padlocks to the bridge.

Some couples use a Sharpie to identify their locks.

Others have gone so far as to have their locks engraved.

Talk about having a lock on someone's heart.

Click through to Ziva's blog and share the love.

A little different, don't you think?

Wow. That is different. I'm so glad they don't sign their underwear and wrap it around that pole.

I've seen this before, somewhere. I love it, but I always wonder who first starts these things and why.

There are a lot of these around the world. I think it's a great idea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_locations_with_love_locks

I've seen a different pic of this bridge. I like your pic. Detail, color, it's very good.

Such a neat idea and great image!

What happens if the love affairs goes sour? Do they unlock the lock?
nonamedufus said…
Thanks, 54. It's pretty unique.

Now that's an excellent question, Tami. I don' really know. I would suspect yes.

Oh, I love this, Dufus, such a great take on the theme! Now, tell me the truth, you're a bit of a romantic, aren't you?

What a fun take on this prompt! Did you and Maryse toss a padlock on there too?
nonamedufus said…
I kept putting off and putting off going out and snapping this. I'm glad I finally did it. It's so neat.
nonamedufus said…
Awesome, isn't it?
nonamedufus said…
Aw, my secret's out. Don't tell anyone. You'll spoil my image.
nonamedufus said…
Um, ah, gosh, no. But she already has the key to my heart. How's that?

I first saw locks used like this in Lecce, Puglia. The central piazza, on one side of the little amphitheatre, has its lamp posts bristling with padlocks with names on them! I didn't know what they were for until we arrived in the north of Italy and I asked my friend Paola. She told me what they meant, and added that many Italians regard them in the same light as graffiti, if not worse. I was quite sad about that, because I thought it was a nice, and completely harmless, idea!

That's a great story. It's interesting to know that this unique display of affection can be found around the world.

Cool pic. I didn't know we had something like this. It's a neat tradition though. Saw something similar in Florence and in NYC.

You're a hopeless romantic. I like that about you.
And here I thought you were going to share a photo of Maryse.... I hope you at least added a lock for her while you were there.

I'll be using another pic in J.P.'s challenge this week. It is a neat idea and adds to the charm of the architecture of the bridge I think.
nonamedufus said…
Are you kidding? She'd kill me if I shared a picture of her. Don't know why. After all, she's a wonderful looking woman! But she hates having her picture taken.
nonamedufus said…
Well, you may be half right. Mrs D has been known to call me hopeless.

It's better than graffiti but I'm not sure I get it. Eh! It's Canadians! Who knows!
nonamedufus said…
It's not just Canadians. Locks on bridges to demonstrate love are fund all over the world! But Canadians are a loving bunch, though.

Hey you and Alex should go out and leave a lock on the Golden Gate Bridge to celebrate your anniversary. Have you got a really, really tall stepladder?

I think that is a very creative way to symbolize a relationship...well if someone needs to symbolize it in some way. Better than carving initials into trees or spray painting graffiti.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D
