30 Days of Photos - Day 28 - Lover


In Ottawa, the Corktown pedestrian bridge spans the Rideau Canal linking the city's Somerset Street with Ottawa University.

Since it's completion in September of 2006, the bridge has become famous worldwide.

Why?

Local lovers have taken to demonstrate their love for one another by attaching padlocks to the bridge.

Some couples use a Sharpie to identify their locks.

Others have gone so far as to have their locks engraved.

Talk about having a lock on someone's heart.

I first saw locks used like this in Lecce, Puglia. The central piazza, on one side of the little amphitheatre, has its lamp posts bristling with padlocks with names on them! I didn't know what they were for until we arrived in the north of Italy and I asked my friend Paola. She told me what they meant, and added that many Italians regard them in the same light as graffiti, if not worse. I was quite sad about that, because I thought it was a nice, and completely harmless, idea!

It's not just Canadians. Locks on bridges to demonstrate love are fund all over the world! But Canadians are a loving bunch, though.

I think that is a very creative way to symbolize a relationship...well if someone needs to symbolize it in some way. Better than carving initials into trees or spray painting graffiti.

I say attempted because I slapped a big DNF (did not finish) on Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. I just can't seem to get into this guy. It's the second or third of his I've given up on, Not so the other four, starting with a biography of Stephen Stills called Change Partners. This followed by a hilarious biography of the guy responsible for National Lampoon called A Stupid and Futile Gesture - How Doug Kenney and National Lampoon Changed Comedy Forever. I ended the month reading yet another biography, this one of the man behind Rolling Stone magazine,. It was called Sticky Fingers: The Life and Times of Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine. 30 Days of Writing - Day #1 - Cheese

Well, here we go again folks. As if it weren't enough that I knocked myself out in April participating in 30 Days of Photos, now dear Nicky and Mike over at We Work For Cheese have corralled a bunch of us suckers into a 30 Days of Writing exercise. Yeah, I know. I must have stupid written backwards on my forehead. I don't know how they figured it out. They would have had to look in my mirror to realize it.
