30 Days of Photos - #19 - White

Welcome to 30 Days of Photos, where 18 bloggers are participating in posting a photo a day for 30 days. Here are the other 17 you can visit after you've been here:

In this instance the light at the end of the tunnel, while white, is not an approaching speeding train. This is the (in)famous Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine Tunnel in Montreal (Hi Nicky and Mike!). On Easter weekend my wife and I were traveling from Victoriaville (which likes to think of itself as the poutine capital of the world) to Montreal (the roads and bridges under construction capital of the world). The bridge travels beneath the main shipping channel of the St. Lawrence River.

It's scary. Tiles have fallen off the tunnel walls. It's always dripping. I have visions of that movie 2012 with John Cusack every time I pass through it.

So in this case. the light at the end of the tunnel was the Island of Montreal. Where, by the way, you can't turn right on a red light.

Also, in this case, it's a good thing to go towards the light...which is white.

I'm glad you explained that that wasn't a train because when I first saw it I thought, "Run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I'm 50% French-Canadian and right now I'm thanking my lucky stars that neither my Memere or Pepere ever foisted that dish on us.

That tunnel looks just like the old Sumner Tunnel in Boston. That was a scary trip. Beware of too much complaining because you could just find yourself involved in the chaos and never-ending nightmare of what we called The Big Dig.

I always head into the light. Shiny is good. So is this shot.
My wife wouldn't like this photo. She hates tunnels.

Me? I think they're cool...as is this photo.

I don't particularly care for tunnels, but at least your photo shows the light at the end of it. Today's Finland fact: you can't turn right on a red light anywhere in Finland.

Don't run from the non-existent train. Run from the dripping water!

Poutine? You never had poutine. It's great. I like to think of it as cardiac arrest on a plate...
nonamedufus said…
Thanks, Bryan. You don't waste time going through this tunnel, believe me.

Who knew the French and the Finns had something like that in common, huh? We're kindred spirits or something. I feel much closer to you than ever before.
Ziva said…
That's not you outside my door trying to get in, is it?
nonamedufus said…
No that's not me. I'm still stuck at the corner, waiting for the light to change.

We can't turn right on a red here, either. Who knew?

I don't think I've ever travelled through an underwater tunnel. Considering that this one leak, I'll stick to above ground bridges.

;-)

It's not just the tunnel, and I'm sure Nicky will back me up here, but everywhere you go in Montreal these days there's construction and detours. It's bloody awful trying to get through that city.

You poor thing...whenever you have visions of that God-awful movie, 2012, I sincerely sympathize with you. I'd run to the light as well...if only to get those horrible images out of my brain.

It's funny how that tunnel is nowhere on my radar. I haven't been through it in years and years. Considering the leaks, I think I'll continue to stay away from it.

Strangely enough, given how cheap it would have been to make, my Memere never foisted this on us. Maybe the curds were too expensive down here?

Exactly right.

Nice idea and photo! We have underwater tunnels and I always think they are leaking - but really they are sweating. Still creaps me out!

Cool pic! I hope it's white at the end of tunnel some day. *grin*

It was kind of a schlocky movie, wasn't it? But it had a happy ending!
nonamedufus said…
Yeah, it's scary in there. Remember the flash flood on Decarie a few years back? That's what I try not to think about when I drive through this tunnel.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, creepy is the word. I never thought I'd hurtle quite as fast toward the light.
nonamedufus said…
It's white as long as it's daylight. Here's another pic...
nonamedufus said…
There's nothing quite like it when you're looking for a cholesterol high.
nonamedufus said…
Or drive, I guess.
Ok, fine, I believe you, BUT not every white light approaching you down a tunnel is an "Island of Montreal" so just be careful.

Ah yes.... the light at the end of the tunnel! Good one.

And yes, tunnels are scary as all hell!!!!!!!!!

I thought for a minute the theme you were going for is "approaching the bright light" ...you know the one I mean...so if this ever appears to you and you aren't sure if your are alive...back the hell up.
Linda Medrano said…
I'm not going in that scary tunnel with "the light" on the other side. Oh not me! You are brave.
nonamedufus said…
No that's true. Nor would you want it to be.
nonamedufus said…
Boy I really didn't know what to think initially as I hurtled towards this light. I thought that was it and I was going to cross over in a tunnel!
nonamedufus said…
It's kind of hard to back up when you're in one of three lanes of traffic zipping along at 120km an hour.
nonamedufus said…
Believe me I was very happy to emerge into the sunlight at the other end of that dark, leaking tunnel.
MalisaHargrove said…
Very cool. It is so nice to know that at the end, we will all be in Montreal.
nonamedufus said…
Ha, ha, ha, I never thought of it like that before. Yes we're all gonna burn in Montreal!

I once had a dream about entering a tunnel.

Okay, twice. I'm perverted.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D
