All Things Being Equal...

But they aren't, are they. If they were, then why did W.C. Fields want to rather be in Philadelphia?

A-ha. You see. All things aren't equal.

It's like the difference between a Russian Lada and an American Cadillac.  Sure they're both cars. But they're very different.

How about Hellman's mayonaise and Nuttella. They're both bread spreads. But I don't think I'd use the latter to mix my tuna salad.

And what about music? Are Justine Bieber and the Rolling Stones equal?

Haircuts. A brush cut vs. low back and sides and just a little off the top?

Movies. Weekend at Bernie's vs. The Godfather?

Television: My Mother The Car vs. How I Met Your Mother? Okay, okay TV might be a gimme. It's all equally bad.

The Smothers Brothers. Ha, that's easy. Mom always liked Dick best.

But my point is we say things are equal, but they really aren't. We like to think things are but we're only fooling ourselves. It took years before women could vote. They're still working on equal pay. You'd think same sex marriage would be equal to traditional marriage. But it's not. The American constitution says all men are created equal but just ask an immigrant or refugee.

I guess the classic example would be heaven and hell. Sure, they're both places in the afterlife, but all things being equal... ha, ha you see I did it myself. Nevertheless, they aren't equal. Everybody knows heaven's air conditioned.

All things being equal, should I be concerned that I accidentally got on the down escalator again?

CL: Not again? Are you doing a Mae West? "When I'm good, I'm very good. When I'm bad, I'm better"?

Equal is to equivalent what same is to similar. Some things are weaselly distinguisshed but stoatally different.

I like your comparisons, and your approach.

Julie: Thanks, Julie. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I always thought it odd that we say "all things being equal..."
Would heaven be air conditioned, or would it just be a pleasant 65 to 75 degrees all the time, with a pleasant breeze and a luau at the end of every day? You know, like Hawaii, except bigger.

All things being equal, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?

Mike: Is there life after death? Is the afterlife equal to the now life? Is there heaven and hell? Is heaven air conditioned? Is there a luau at the end of every day? You notice I'm going with the questions here. I hope someone has the answers.

KABLOOEY: It wasn't bad. Shame Abe had to leave before the last act.

nice contrast...i do need to brush my teeth now just thinking about tuna and nutella mixed...and no equal does not add up in many realms....

Equal is not a synonym for "fair," otherwise I'd have thin thighs and perky breasts and a hot hockey player for a husband.

Tuna with Nutella?

Gag.

All things being equal I STILL feel like hurling.

hee hee

Brian: Yeah I thought tuna and nutella would grab some people. Blech!

Kelly: Um, TMI! I kinda like the internet thing where you get to imagine what people look like. And of course that's how I imagined you'd look. Oh by the way, I'm 6'8" in my skates and hung like a horse.

Quirks: Oh, sorry, didn't mean to make you hurl. And while I've been known as nutty I've never had nutella.

All things being equal, why is it that I have just now found out about your blog? Good stuff here. I'll add you to my suggested blogs.

Jeff: Glad you like the place. I used to follow you when we belonged to Humor Bloggers Dot Com. I've only just rearranged my blog roll so that it updates automatically, moving blogs with the most current content to the top. Voila, I discovered I had you on my blog roll. That's why I stopped by today and commented on your post. Looking forward to more.
can't argue with any of that, well said!
Call me odd, but I'm one of the few who would rather watch "Weekend at Bernie's."

Hell, I'd watch one of those Jim Varney movies before trying to sit through "The Godfather" again.

Like "Ernest Goes to Jail" or "Ernest Eats a Tuna-tella Sandwich."

Interesting post. I think I prefer egality to equality anyway...

Haha!! Very nice read. There is so much not equal that maybe the mess all equals out in the end. Who knows? lol Great read.

Everyday Goddess: Oh, wow, I like you!

Jeremy: Funny. Ernie Eats a Tuna-tella Sandwich. Must have missed that one

Cruella: As some might say: "same diff". I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Bobbie: Now that's a philosophical approach. Are you an equalstentialist by any chance? Happy to hear you enjoyed the read. Thanks for dropping by.

Great post and a wonderful take on the theme! Personally I can't really see what the difference is between a Russian Lada and an American Cadillac, they're both useless compared to German cars anyway.

Ziva: You're wicked. That's a low blow. Besides, we all drive Japanese cars over here.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy! ...

Hello Goodbye

Today a bit of a reflective piece. Rather than being funny, this is  about the funny. It's a day of mixed emotion at nonamedufus . You see, after several months of inactivity I've dropped a couple of former blogger buddies off my blog roll. I kept hanging on and hanging on hoping they'd return to active blogging but, alas, after waiting in one case five months I've decided to let them go. I'm going to miss - going to? I have been missing - Margo at the Screaming Me-Me . She was one funny lady. From time to time she and I would engage in a feud or two for several days at a time but it was all in fun both for us and, I think, for our readers. And we'd leave each other funny comments, poking fun at each other. I miss her friendship and our humorous exchanges. The other blogger I'm letting go is Chelle, The Offended Blogger . Chelle was a special lady. In addition to her own blog she created and managed Humor Bloggers Dot Com where humour bloggers like m...

The Dangling Conversation

There's a debate underway in my household between my wife and I. I say "underway" because it hasn't quite reached the "raging" stage. If you want raging, my wife (a Francophone) and I (an Anglophone) from time to time (usually in a weak moment of my own making) slip into our number one discussion around why we don't speak more French at home - ergo - when am I, a former public servant who learned French at the expense of our gracious taxpayers and was technically rated bilingual (even though I hardly used it), going to improve my use of Canada's other language? This one never gets resolved, hence it's ongoing nature. But the current debate is over a remark I casually made the other day. I'm no geek, but with a lot of time on my hands I surf the web, converse on Facebook and such and - I have to admit - "I'm nonamedufus and I'm a Twitterholic". In an epiphany-like moment I was struck by the apparent impact of social networkin...
