30 Days of Photos IV - Day 16 - Biblical

I wracked my brain over this prompt. Biblical? What do I know about the bible? Sure I was raised Catholic but it's been some time since I've been a practicing member.

So I hopped in the car and drove downtown and snapped a photo of St. Patrick's Basilica. Built in 1875, St. Patrick's is the city's oldest English-speaking Roman Catholic Church.

Funny thing. When I was a kid my buddies and I would whisper and fool around during mass at Holy Cross Church. The pastor was Father Francis French who would stop the mass and tell us to calm down or remind us what page we were on in the prayer book.

Flash forward.

Father French became Monsignor French at St. Patrick's from 1977 to 1993, where he said mass, heard confessions and presided over the distribution of Holy Communion to faithful parishioners.

I ended up working for the federal government and 10 years after Monsignor French had left St.  Patrick's I arrived in that glass building to the right as Director General of Communications at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Loaves and fishes?

That's biblical.

Join me in worshiping at the feet of Ziva today for the rest of the biblical prompts.

It was 52 years ago that I left the catholic church. As soon as I left school (at 15) and was considered an adult and able to make my own decisions. I can still remember it all so clearly, except it was all in Latin.

Beautiful shot, old mixed with the new and a clear blue sky.

My parents were quite religious but me, not so much. I left the church pretty much when I left home. I haven't been back.

That church is an Ottawa landmark. It was only designated a basilica in the late 1990s.
Ha ha what a turn around! Now you can feed the Masses! Get it!?

That is a cool pic and a great story. Nice job.

Ooh, ahh. I like the connections but I think the message was that the Lord wanted you to feed the fishies to the kitties. :)

Gorgeous church and photo!

Groan! Very good, Katherine.

Glad you liked it 54.

Now, Reffie, that's just cruel.

What a beautiful church and interesting story, John. Well done, my friend. Well done!

Nice photograph, NoName. I like your story, too, although I'm not sure it's kosher to compare yourself to Jesus.

Nice pic and cool tie in. You had me hook, line, and sinker....;)

Thanks you Meleah. I love when a story comes full circle. Kinda like The Newsroom finale last night.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, what kind of games to they play in that department?

Nice photo, great story, blah blah. Now, tell me more about worshiping at the feet of Ziva....
nonamedufus said…
Oh I wasn't comparing myself to Jesus. Just his PR guy.
nonamedufus said…
It was a tale of biblical proportions, don't ya think?
nonamedufus said…
Just sounded like a good place to start, Ziva.
meleahrebeccah said…
TOTALLY!!!!!!

I loved the finale! I'm sad it's over though. I hope they have another season.

:(

I really like the way you think.

Get a room, you two. And not inside the church. We don't want God burning it to the ground.

Loaves and fishes! Very Biblical!

Love the little story about Monsignor French. How odd the way things intertwine over time.
nonamedufus said…
Hubba, hubba. (Do people still say that?)
nonamedufus said…
I don't think God will have anything to do with it. (Get behind me Satan!)
nonamedufus said…
Didn't Jeff Daniels recently Tweet they were in for a Season 3?
nonamedufus said…
And one more tie in. Father French was the parish priest where my family went when I was a kid. When my Dad died his funeral was at St. Patrick's officiated by Father (Monsignor) French.
meleahrebeccah said…
I think I missed that! But I'm googling for info on The Newsroom right now!

Gorgeous building!
meleahrebeccah said…
I haven't watched that show yet is it any good?
nonamedufus said…
It is.and the interior is amazing...
nonamedufus said…
On it's own I suppose so. But it's nowhere near the book by Stephen King and for that reason I'm disappointed. It just hasn't got the same edge or level of suspense.
nonamedufus said…
Have you watched Boardwalk Empire. It's great!
Loaves and fishes indeed! You finally made good... the Monsignor would be so proud.
nonamedufus said…
You know he would, not to mention my Dad.
meleahrebeccah said…
Oh. Gotcha! Then I probably won’t watch it. I have way too much TV in my life as it is!
nonamedufus said…
Well, now that I've watched the series I may as well watch the finale.
meleahrebeccah said…
Oh totally! You can't watch a whole season and NOT watch the finale!
Linda Medrano said…
Great story and very nice photo!!
nonamedufus said…
Thanks, Linda. I just noticed the green light in the photo. Green you go to heaven, red you're with me.

That story took long route, but it was absolutely worth it! Loaves and fishes indeed. And shame on you for being disruptive during church services. I used to get in SO MUCH trouble for that! Ouch!
Lauren said…
Father Francis French, that's a mouthful. But I do love alliteration. Wonderful backstory.
nonamedufus said…
The annoying part was when he'd stop the mass to tell me what page we were on. Embarrassing.
nonamedufus said…
It's my life and welcome to it.
Ziva said…
You are so right, Dufus, But I wouldn't entirely rule out the possibility of God's name being uttered.
Traci Shannon said…
Sooooo biblical and a pretty picture to boot!

Damn. I thought it was a limited series. Turns out it'll be back next summer and I have to wait until then to see how the cliffhanger of a finale turns out.

Isn't it funny how those little coincidences happen? I think that is a really interesting picture with a building that is so old in the same line of vision as modern architecture.
nonamedufus said…
The "modern" building you refer to is known as Centennial Towers and was built in 1966 and renovated in 1982.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D
