30 Days of Photos - #9 - Something I Hate

Welcome to 30 Days of Photos, where 18 bloggers are participating in posting a photo a day for 30 days. Here are the other 17 you can visit after you've been here:

I took this pic in a grocery store in Panama last week. I didn't purchase the peas. I'd never purchase peas.

I hate peas. Absolutely can't stand them. It stems from an incident in my childhood. When I was a kid and the pre-teen son of parents who were practising Catholics, we didn't eat meat on Fridays. So Fridays, without fail, were Tuna Casserole Night. Yep, Kraft Dinner - or as you Americans so elegantly refer to it:  Mac and Cheese - and tuna.

But my mother took a bit of a twist on the dish to dress it up a bit. You know, to give it some colour. She added a can of peas. I don't think I knew there was such a thing as fresh peas until I was an adult.  I'd do all kinds of things with the peas, except eat them. They'd make me gag. I'd push them to one side of my plate. I'd push them under my plate. I'd spit them into my glass of milk. I'd excuse myself from the table on the pretext of going to the bathroom and spit them out in the toilet. I made a lot of trips to the bathroom on Fridays.

To this day I can't eat peas. Or liver, but that's another tale for another time. And I won't be taking any pictures of liver.

Yay. I knew it. I'm becoming psychic. Now if I could only win the lottery.

I love peas! So sorry you had such traumatizing Fridays, though... Do you need a hug?

Peas aren't my favorite vegetable, I admit, but I don't hate them. Liver: I'm with you. Blech. However, I do want to hear the story. :)

Boy, am I glad my parents are heathens and I never had to experience this kind of trauma! I love peas. Kraft Dinner, on the other hand... ugh.

I love peas but I usually don't like green foods, except M&M's, of course.

I can see that canned peas might turn people into a hater of peas. (mush in a can) I would say you are a pretty good guy if that is the extent of your "hate". I can provide you a list of "possibilities" if you ever need suggestions.

I love peas but my hubby can't stand them, so our children have never been subjected to the "eat your peas or else" threat.

Peas on their own are fine. With KD? Shudder. I "can" see why you hate them.

Ha! I should have known. Today's theme was way too peasy for you.

I HATE PEAS! They make me gag. If you gave me the choice between peas or a punch in the kidney I would take a punch in the kidney.
nonamedufus said…
Who the heck are you and how do you know my food preferences?
nonamedufus said…
A hug? Sure. But not right after you've eaten peas. If there's one thing I hate more than peas it's pea breath. That doesn't sound right does it?

My Dad loved liver and onions with lima beans. I hated that dinner with a passion. Almost as much as peas. My mother soon gave up on trying to make me eat it.
nonamedufus said…
There was a time - during my university days - when I lived on KD. And fried balogna sandwiches. For some reason I've never had a hankering for either of those delicacies since.
nonamedufus said…
There's green M&M's? That might remind me too much of peas.
nonamedufus said…
You know there's more from my younger days. Canned stewed tomatoes and canned cream corn rank right up there too.
Unfinished Person said…
THAT is cruel. Lima beans on top of it...ugh.
nonamedufus said…
My kids either. Since I didn't like them we never had them when they were growing up. My philosophy was it's kinda like religion. They'd make up their own minds when they came of age.
nonamedufus said…
You see, I'm just the opposite. I was ok with the KD, but the peas? Oh, groan, I just clued into your pun. Nice one.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, yeah, as soon as I saw "Something I hate" I knew. I just knew. And again with the puns. Groan. ;)
nonamedufus said…
A man after my own kidney. Right on, Shawn.

But my dad loved it. It was his favourite meal. My Dad wasn't quite right sometimes, or so I thought.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, snap, not at all. The weird thing is I love pea soup, and snow peas are to die for. But fresh, frozen or canned peas make me wanna retch.
Unfinished Person said…
You were right to think that: he wasn't. ;) But then again, now we know where you get it from...
nonamedufus said…
Now my secret's out. Yep, that's exactly where I get it from. My Dad was the funniest guy I ever knew.

I hate to admit this here, in an international forum that seems to be exclusively devoted to promoting the global hatred of peas, but I love peas. Canned or fresh, I feel that they are one of nature's finest foods, especially when boiled, salted and soaked in butter. I particularly enjoy eating them with mashed potatoes, gravy and a nice bit of medium rare roast beef, but I've been known to eat them on their own, as if they were a stand-alone dish. Once, and I probably shouldn't admit this, I even had a sex dream involving peas. They're that good.

Peas are one of the vegetables I actually LOVE!

Dufus, I too suffered the tuna casseroles on Friday with canned peas stuck in it for a bit of color. Gag me. I did finally grow up and realize that peas are not manufactured green slugs to be put in cans. Fresh peas are actually quite tasty and inoffensive when cooked correctly. Unfortunately, my dear old Mom just wanted any vegetable cooked into a mush consistency and that pretty much turned us all of of green things for many years.
I hate it when I come to a blog expecting a history lesson and don't get one...have you ever had mushy peas? They are it.
nonamedufus said…
Blasphemer.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, man, I'm starting to think I'm among the minority.

It's amazing the things our parents did that turned us off, isn't it? How could they have done that? I seem to remember eating balogna on Fridays. I think my parents thought there was no meat in balogna. On that score they may actually have been right.
nonamedufus said…
What do you mean no history lesson. This is the history of my mis-pea-nt youth.
Sorry. It just didn't feel like the sort of 'history' that I've become accustomed to.
nonamedufus said…
Okay, okay, maybe this will appease you...

Oh man, this brought back memories of being raised Catholic. My mom never put peas or tuna in Mac'N'Cheese, that would have been sacrilege. She did, however, make this weird thing called "Tuna Pea Wiggle." White sauce, peas, and tuna all poured over Saltines. It was to die for (except for the peas). I've grown to love fresh raw peas and peapods and even like fresh peas lightly cooked. That crap from the cans or frozen food section will kill ya.
nonamedufus said…
When you said Tuna Pea Wiggle I thought you were going to say your mom hid canned peas in a jello mold.

You know I may have sold peas short. I would support peas in one instance...

HA HA HA! I had to show my mother this.... she HATES peas!!!!!!!! Always has. She says she hates the hard crunch when you bite down, and then the squishy stuff that squirts out. I love it!
nonamedufus said…
Peas are the worst. And yes it's the consistency. Their god awful tasting mush. I think I love your mom.

When my children were small they learned the kids' rhyme about peas:

Peas porridge hot,
Peas porridge cold,
Peas porridge in a pot
Nine days old.

Naturally, they decided they wanted nine-day-old peas porridge. My wife made up a batch of peas porridge (after first finding out how to do it -- not an easy task in pre-internet days), then put it in the fridge for nine days. The kids were impressed, but not overly, and never asked for it again.

Oh, Frank, that's just sick. Surprised my mother didn't think of it.

My Back Pages - November

I know, I know, I know I should have reported in before now. But sometimes real life just gets in the way. I attempted 5 books in November. I say attempted because I slapped a big DNF (did not finish) on Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. I just can't seem to get into this guy. It's the second or third of his I've given up on, Not so the other four, starting with a biography of Stephen Stills called Change Partners. This followed by a hilarious biography of the guy responsible for National Lampoon called A Stupid and Futile Gesture - How Doug Kenney and National Lampoon Changed Comedy Forever. I ended the month reading yet another biography, this one of the man behind Rolling Stone magazine,. It was called Sticky Fingers: The Life and Times of Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine. A fascinating read. So last month I hit the magic number 50 I'd imagined for myself back in January. If I roll this month into my yearly total I'm at 54 books. And I still hav...

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy! ...
