30 Days of Photos - #15 - Wood

For our regulars expecting to find Sunday Funnies here, just jog on over to dufus daze where the week's best editorial cartoons are on display. Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

****

Welcome to 30 Days of Photos, where 18 bloggers are participating in posting a photo a day for 30 days. Here are the other 17 you can visit after you've been here:

Well, we're into week 3 of our little photo sojourn. The half-way point. Yippee. Only two more weeks to go. So settle back and let's see what's yet to develop.

"Chop your own wood and it will warm you twice."
(Henry Ford)

A couple of years ago we had to chop down a huge maple tree in our backyard. It had split and we were worried it might fall on the house in a heavy wind.

The wood from that tree has lasted us several years. We love lighting fires in the fireplace during the cold, winter months. We still have plenty of kindling in the garage to last us through next year. Looks like I don't have to buy firewood for yet another year!

Not that I'm in any hurry to see winter again, mind you.

They almost look like limbs and torsos for wooden puppets. What is it you really do again??

You can call me Gepetto.
If you've got some spare time maybe you could whittle me a whistle.
nonamedufus said…
Do you want a whittle whistle or a big one?
Ziva said…
The wood has lasted several years? Wow. I'm impressed, dufus.
Cheryl said…
Do you think in puns?
Cheryl said…
I'm guessing you don't use wood as your primary source of heat because if this has lasted several years, that had to be the mother of all maples.

Two years ago we bought four chords of firewood. Then we chopped down the tree. We've been in great shape ever since. I've got maybe another winter's worth of wood before we have to get more.
nonamedufus said…
No, the fireplace is for mostly aesthetic purposes. But there's nothing quite like the smell of burning wood.
nonamedufus said…
I do. It tends to get on the nerves of those closest to me, though. But it's all relative.
You've got the white hair for it. ;)

Your puns below just cracked me up!! I had a dear friend who adored puns - she would have loved this!
Your photo is wonderful!! We haven't had a working wood fireplace in years - switched to gas. I used to love them - now I don't know that I could handle the "aroma" of burning wood.

A friend's father thought like this too. How I miss him. The upside is now I have you. (See how I divorced myself from your comment.)
Cheryl said…
That's so heart-warming.
nonamedufus said…
I think that was a pun, right? Oak-ay!
nonamedufus said…
Yeah, that was a separate thing you had going on there.
nonamedufus said…
Yeah, but at least it's not my nose that grows.

Love the photo. Reminds me of the fireplace we had growing up.

I have a fireplace in my home but it's mainly idle. I'm not sure if the city even allows them to be used anymore.
Ziva said…
Oh, you were talking about that kind of wood...
nonamedufus said…
Puns are fun. It's a lot more fun when there's two or more of you competing to see who can come up with the worst one. My brothers and I often do this when we get together. And the Coronas seem to help, too.

Gas has it's place. They can really warm a room up. But if you're looking for ambiance, the crackling of the wood, the smell of the fire, the smoke in the room when you forget to open the flue, there's nothing like a wood-burning fireplace.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, you were talking about hard wood?
nonamedufus said…
I had two piles of wood to choose from for this day. Here's the other one, complete with cobwebs...

BAHAHAHAHA!

Boy howdy I am impressed how you all have these handy dandy pictures around.

Wood. Whoda thunk it. Or should that be whoda trunk it!

HA!

Now off to the funnies!

The wood picture was easy. I've got a garage full of firewood. When people ask me if I'd store it in the garage I say "Sure I wood!"

Nothing like a good fire in the fireplace. Lurch has a term that he uses to describe a good fire. He calls it a "roaring ass fire". It is strange how that term has traveled the state of Texas as we have moved from place to place. All of our friends use that term now and their friends and... You get it. See how Lurch has had an impact on society with his wood?
MalisaHargrove said…
I forgot to say that I really like your photo. I was busy thinking about Lurch's wood. Sorry.
nonamedufus said…
I'll bet Lurch's wood is really something to behold.
nonamedufus said…
See, I told you!
Nora Blithe said…
Great quote. More people should embrace it.
meleahrebeccah said…
Oh you're lucky that wood lasted you for so long. We constantly have to get more wood for our fireplaces.
MalisaHargrove said…
Or hold.

I love fireplaces and wish we could use ours more often - there is something so comforting and peaceful in watching and listening to a fire. Could this be a prelude to Day 18?

Good photo, too. Wood, in any form, can be eye pleasing.

;-)

This is also a good photo - I guess it was hard for you to choose which one you wood use?

(Okay, I suck at puns.)

;-)

A trip to Florida and a trip to Panama as well as a mild winter meant we didn't use as much foreword as usual.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, my goodness!
nonamedufus said…
Well, I wanted to post the best one on the "web".
nonamedufus said…
It's not a prelude to Day 18 but nevertheless I'm still fired up about it.
00dozo said…
Oh, lord. Help me now - better yet, just shoot me.

;-)
nonamedufus said…
Too much, eh? Got you over a barrel?
MalisaHargrove said…
Sorry. It's the wine talking.

I'm sorry you lost your maple, but at least it's doing you some good. A hard wood is good to find.
Linda Medrano said…
Maple burns nice too! I'm glad the tree went to good use. Nice photo, John!
I actually see different figures in that picture. That is pretty neat!
Kristen said…
Great photo. Aesthetically - very nice :) (like that big word?) - but ... I love a warm fire too....
nonamedufus said…
Indeed, Michael. I see my picture has twigged a little compassion there. Thank you..
nonamedufus said…
Oh it burns wonderfully. Thank you, Linda.
nonamedufus said…
What kind of figurers, Katherine? Are you still taking your meds?
nonamedufus said…
Thank you, Kristen. Have you been using your thesaurus?
nonamedufus said…
I thought it was Lurch talking.

Sunday Funnies

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D
