30 Days of Photos - #28 - Outlier

Welcome to 30 Days of Photos, where 18 bloggers are participating in posting a photo a day for 30 days. Here are the other 17 you can visit after you've been here:

Today's theme is "outlier". One of the definitions of outlier is:

"someone who stands apart from others of his or her group, as by differing actions, beliefs, religious practices, etc..outsider, nonconformist, maverick; original, eccentric, bohemian; dissident, dissenter, iconoclast, heretic."

We have a friend who fits this description to a tee. Tee for Terry. Terry runs a restaurant called Hino's. A Japanese restaurant...because Terry Hino is Japanese.

Terry's run his restaurant for close to 30 years. We discovered him about 10 years ago and have visited him about once a month ever since.

We always are offered a place of pride; sitting at the bar overlooking the kitchen. That way we can chat with Terry while he makes our dinner.

Funny guy. He hates being busy. He'll swear to himself when customers walk in because he knows it means more work. He'll swear in French for my wife's benefit.

Yet he's fast. So fast it's hard to take a picture of him.

But the food is delicious.

His eccentricities are charming.

And his friendship is valued.

This is so charming and heartwarming and completely spot on for 'outlier.' Are you going there for your birthday dinner tonight? I'll bet he'd make you a plate of 60 of whatever you want.

Happy Happy Birthday, John. Here's to many more!

Happy birthday to my favourite dufus! I love this photo. And based on your wonderful post today, it fits absolutely perfectly, in all its artsy motion blur. Wonderful job, dufus. :)
So he serves fast food, huh?

Sorry, I couldn't resist, especially on your birthday.

Hope you're having a happy one too, my friend.

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you....I guess you know the rest of the song...hope you have a fun day planned.

Great entry today. He does look busy and fast.

And here I thought the word meant out of here. Like he's outlier! You know when you say it really fast?

Thanks for clearing that up for me Dufus! *smile*

And a most righteous and happy birthday to ye Dufus!

Happy Birthday, dufus! And many more.

Great take on the theme, both photo and post.

Aww... You have a rare find indeed.

Hell, finding a good server is hard enough.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Great take on the theme! Thought at first that you were going to say that he owned a Japanese restaurant and was Chinese - that would be an outlier for sure!

Happy Birthday, Dufus, and a most unique take on the theme.

Now I'm craving Japanese food.

My wife has something planned for me tonight, apparently. Thanks for the birthday wishes and for that great mention on your blog today. You blew me away!
nonamedufus said…
Wow, I'll never get the whip at this rate. Thanks, Ziva.
nonamedufus said…
Ha, ha, thanks Bryan. Having a great birthday, actually.

I'm sure that's not the last time I'll hear that today. Thanks, Cheryl. Terry's a great guy and it's very entertaining watching him prepare your meal.

My brother, Whitey - you all know Whitey, right? - says he thought it was a recently declared lying lesbian. Think about it.

You're welcome. Have a grand time tonight! (You have no idea how much I'm restraining my fingers from typing something completely inappropriate in response to your comment.)

Thanks, 00dozo. Terry's a pretty unique guy.

We love going there. He's always so damn entertaining. The food's great and we have a good laugh. What more could one want?
nonamedufus said…
Yes it would, wouldn't it. Appreciate the birthday wishes.

If you're ever in Ottawa, we'll take you to Terry's.

What a great photo and story. Happy birthday Dufus! Hope you have a wonderful day!
nonamedufus said…
So far, so good, Nicky. Thanks!

I know. I kind of left that open to interpretation. Well, I'll leave it to you to guess.
Ziva said…
Well, it is your birthday, if you want the whip, the whip you shall get. Are you ready for me?
nonamedufus said…
Like Ian Dury used to say, "hit me with your rhythm stick, hit me, hit me, hit me..."
Ziva said…
It will be my pleasure. I'll be right there.

Best. Present. Ever!
The fact that Hino, the owner and cook, curses when people arrive is simply phenomenal, I love him already.

Its great to find a restaurant that you can declare is your special place. I would probably like Terry because I like men who can curse in different languages! Doesn't take much for me! Happy Birthday, Dufus! Hope you get a big plate of noodles tonight or at least get to use your noodle!

I think he's standing by himself because he doesn't trust anyone to make his yummy food. :)

Well I think you did a FABULOUS JOB - because I *stil*l have NO IDEA what that freakin word means. And yes I am leaving this comment on EVERYONE'S blogs! Ahahahahahahahha

That's a wonderful post, NoName. It reminds me of the Chinese restaurant we like. We've eaten there for about 15 years and watched the waitresses and their kids age and grow up. They treat us like old friends, which we are. Really nice take on today's theme.

What you should do is leave one comment that says, "This is an awesome theme because I love the word Outlier."

That comment would be an Outlier.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, he's a very colourful guy. And stand back when the knives start flying!
nonamedufus said…
Thanks, Malisa. Didn't have noodles. Had a huge meal and a big path that my wife organized. Great fun.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, no. He's the only one.
nonamedufus said…
You are the outlier among us, Meleah.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, sure. You like the theme cause you're the guy that came up with it.
nonamedufus said…
You're old, Mike? Huh.
Linda Medrano said…
The photo is great, but the writing is absolutely stunning. Nice work, John!
meleahrebeccah said…
And I'm okay with that!
nonamedufus said…
Golly, thanks Linda. Thanks a lot.

I'm a big believer in being friends with the people who make my food and I love Japanese! Yum!

Oh, he's a great guy...and so's his food.

Sunday Funnies

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D
