30 Days of Photos - #25 The Future

Don't forget to mosey on over to dufus daze for this week's Pause Ponder and Pun caption contest. This week's winner could win a fantastic prize...or not.

****

Welcome to 30 Days of Photos, where 18 bloggers are participating in posting a photo a day for 30 days. Here are the other 17 you can visit after you've been here:

Your servant here, he has been told
to say it clear, to say it cold:
It's over, it ain't going
any further
And now the wheels of heaven stop
you feel the devil's riding crop
Get ready for the future:
it is murder

The lyrics are from Leonard Cohen's The Future. I like Leonard Cohen. I love his lyrics. Sometimes they can be a little dark. But, hey, we all have our moments. I hope to be around many more years to enjoy his lyrics. Dark moments now and then notwithstanding.

You see I have cancer. It's a cancer of the blood and bone marrow called multiple myeloma. The upside is it's not terminal but treatable. The downside is I'll always have it. I've had two bone marrow transplants, countless chemo and radiation sessions. I'm currently on a prescribed drug regimen. I take so many pills I lay them out in a weekly dispenser every Saturday. That would appear to be my future.

But like my wife says "That sure beats the alternative." And, yes, she's absolutely right.

Oh, hey, it's my blogaversary. Yeah, 5 years ago today I took the first tentative steps on my journey to interweb infamy. I haven't quite achieved infamy. But I've had a lot of fun along the way. Many thanks to all you guys who have visited over the years and laughed at my posts and endured my penchant for terrible puns. Thanks!

Sorry to hear your future. I was going to do one pulling out my heart pills and blood thinner medicine and say "welcome to my future...for the rest of my life"...so I know, in a way, what you face every day. It sucks. But...that is at least a future. :)

It wasn't the future I would have chosen but I'm happy and content and enjoy life and all it brings from one day to the next.
You definitely enjoy life and bring the joy of it here on your blogs (and Facebook) to all of us. For that, we are truly thankful. Thanks for the 5 years here. It's been quite a trip.

Indeed it has, Bryan. Thanks for your friendship and loyalty for all these years. When life gives you lemons trade them for oranges and make orange juice. (I'm not a big fan of lemonade.)

Happy bloggaversary - that is quite an accomplishment and you are more infamous than you know!!
The cancer sucks, but you are approaching it with grace and an attitude that will serve you well. I had thought about a similar shot for "the devil" of pill bottles from our kitchen table. But it's the reason for the pills that suck not the medications.
We have two sayings around here depending upon the moment.
When life hands you lemons, you suck sour lemons.
or
When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade and sell it. You use the proceeds to buy an uzi and see if life makes the same mistake again.

I was really stuck for today's photo and then, in an unusual moment of self-absorption, went with this. It's not as bad as all that. I focus on the positive and there's lots of that in my life.

Well, that knocked the stuffing out of me. Your honesty and attitude are striking. I have MGUS which, should it ever evolve any further, could lead to MM. For me, your story is uplifting and something I really needed to read. Man, you really do have your s&*t together.

Happy 5th! In interweb years that's about 60. Pretty heady stuff, isn't it?

Who is that guy?
nonamedufus said…
Sometimes during chemo you don't really have your s&*t together. Trust me.

That guy went viral recently as "the most photogenic guy" on the internet as he flashed this smile a the end of his marathon. I thought everybody knew that.

Happy 5th Blog Anniversary!

I'm sorry you have to take so many damn pills. But like you and your wife say, "That sure beats the alternative."

And great song for today's theme!

Dufus, my friend, somehow I feel like you'll be here for a long time after the rest of us have passed on, you are one tough sonofabitch. Pardon my French.

Happy anniversary! And at least your pill dispenser is pretty and colourful. ;)

Congrats on the blogaversary.

I, too hate that you have to go through any of that but I am thankful it is treatable. still...I love your and your wife's attitude.

I think you are much cuter than that guy.

That sucks. I'm sorry. Here's to a future where they find a cure for all cancer, including yours my friend.

Congrats on your 5th. That's totally awesome!
I don't have much to say other than you are one funny tough man who seems to ooze the love of life. Your wife is absolutely right.

Thanks, Meleah. I actually marvel at what you put up with. You're a fighter, for sure. I love Cohen. One of my favourite artists. Saw him in concert a couple of years back. Best performance I've seen in a long time. And he's 77!
nonamedufus said…
I hope you're not saying I'm effeminate with that pill dispenser comment.
nonamedufus said…
It's the only attitude to have!
nonamedufus said…
I think I love you, Linda.

Well, thanks for that Mo. But you spelled booze wrong.

I truly admire your positive outlook because you wouldn't be so punny if you weren't. ;-)

Oh, and Happy Bloggaversary!
nonamedufus said…
One's gotta be positive. It wouldn't be much fun otherwise.

Wait, I thought you *were* that guy!

Happy 5th blogoversary, Pickles!

*I'm studiously avoiding saying anything about your post because if I do I'll get all mushy and sentimental and then you wouldn't even recognize me*

Congrats on 5 years, Dufus. That's no small thing! The other thing is no small thing too, and I admire the way you've approached it. A positive outlook is the most valuable and powerful trait.

I never even thought of my pill organizer. Lord knows it'll be attached to me forever.

Such original idea. And love all translucent colors.

I guess part of the reason I went with the take I did today is that when I started this blog 5 years ago it was how I kept my family up to date on my cancer - and I shared jokes and funny pics with them. The blog's evolved considerably since then. And so have I. For one thing, I'm still here!

Hell, I'm just happy I wake up. Like Groucho Marx said: "Middle age is when you go to bed at night and hope you feel better in the morning. Old age is when you go to bed at night and hope you wake up in the morning."

You'e sweet Nicky. Thanks a lot. Now quit calling me Pickles, Cheezy Woman.

I'm a big fan of Cohen, too, NoName. Here's a nice lyric of his that seems appropriate:

Oh the sisters of mercy, they are not departed or gone.
They were waiting for me when I thought that I just can't go on.
And they brought me their comfort and later they brought me this song.
Oh I hope you run into them, you who've been travelling so long.
Yes you who must leave everything that you cannot control.
It begins with your family, but soon it comes around to your soul.

You've got a lot of spirit, my friend. I admire that.
Congratulations on Five! I refuse to be the downer here, although I have words for you that want to FLOW OUT... so I'll honestly tell you that your picture very thought provoking as well as moving. It is also a very well thought out take on the subject!

My mother has multiple myeloma. She has a wonderful oncologist who is also my cousin. He gets he back into remission every time she goes out. He won't always be able to do that, but for now it is working. She was diagnosed four years ago. So so glad that you are still here with us. Sounds like you have survived the worst and will around for a long long time. Love your photo. Unfortunately, we live that life in our house too.

Nice lyric, Mike. Since I'm turning 60 on Saturday I can identify with the first verse of Tower of Song:

Well my friends are gone and my hair is gray
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day in the tower of song.
nonamedufus said…
Thanks, Katherine. I appreciate your kind thoughts.

Congrats Dufus on your blogaversary. I, for one of many, am glad you blog. I love your puns. The punnier the better.

And as for the pills... I know Brother, I know. Although, some of my pills make me feel purdy good these days.

HA!

Hey, I'm a pill half-full kinda gal.

Thanks for the good wishes, Quirks. I think you've been there from the beginning.

You have pills the make you feel good? Can you tell me which ones?

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D
