Alone Again, Naturally

Week two of the "great strength of our marriage contest" whereby I spend each week at the cottage Maryse and I have rented while Maryse spends Monday to Thursday in the city working. Don't tell her I said this but I'm lonely. I miss her. And I'm left to my own devices. No not the inflatable doll. I mean I have to do things for myself like wake myself up in the morning, prepare my own meals and so on.

This morning I was up at 5:30. I prepared breakfast, ate it, did the dishes, had my shower, got dressed and drove the garbage down the road to the dump. All before 9am. And all without having somebody tell me to do it. Pretty amazing, eh?

There's no cell service here and no network television. I make do with Netflix and You Tube. Catching up on some classic movies. I watched Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction the other night and Spike Jonze's Adaptation with Nicholas Cage the next night. I should have said classic 90s movies.

My meals are pretty pedestrian. Bacon and eggs for breakfast. Hot dogs for lunch. (Shh.) Some left-over stir fry for dinner. I really miss some of the things Maryse prepares like Capricious Salad. What? Oh, yeah. It's Caprese Salad.

Sorry. I can be fickle like that.

The Two Word Tuesday two word prompt is capricious/fickle this week. No Nilson songs were hurt in the writing of this post.

I can't believe you're all by yourself during the week. Do you want me to hop up for a few days so we can make crappy food together?

My food's crappy enough as it is. And you'd probably want to do vegetables.

Exciting times, indeed! You need to take up baking!

Going off-line like that actually sounds very peaceful.

I've been off-line for the past week and it was most refreshing. Sat, read, sat, paddled, sat, ate, sat, went for walks, sat, watched the sunset, sat... you get the picture. Quiet and rejuvenating! Nothing fickle about it!

Reffie, the weather's been such that I'm far from baking. That's the one drawback about communing with nature this year. It's cold.

TL: You know what? It is. So much in fact I'll be quietly reading a book and keep falling asleep!

Paula: It is restful. I'm operating at a whole other speed. And there's no cell service or network television so I'm catching up on my reading.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy! ...

I Am Charlie, I'm A Bore

Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, Colin Farrel...you know the list, it goes on and on. The list of Hollywood hick-ups who not content to meltdown behind closed doors have to drag each and every detail out into the light of day and share it with all of us. Well, add Charlie Sheen to that luckless and lascivious list of losers. In the past few days he's been on every major media soapbox complaining abut how he's been treated and how he's misunderstood. Last night he spent an hour on ABC's 20/20 "in his own words". Charlie, you should have stuck to the script. "I have a highly evolved brain". You know I never did like that song by Helen Reddy in the 70s "I Am Woman". But I have to say the melody really leant itself well to a parody of Hollywood's latest flame-out, Charlie Sheen. Although I never thought I'd hear myself say this, my sincerest apologies to Helen Reddy. And now if you're ready (a little play on wor...
