30DW2-2 - Day 10: The Mayor

Last year my youngest brother, Whitey (y'all remember Whitey?) asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I said "To go golfing." So, lucky me, he took me golfing on my birthday.

We're still talking about it.

You see my birthday is in late April and as it turned out, while sunny, the mercury didn't get above zero celsius.

Now I've only taken up golf in the last couple of years. I love it and I'm keen to get out on the course and swing the clubs anytime.

Whitey on the other hand has been golfing since he was a kid. He's pretty much seen it all. Except for going golfing when it's 0 degrees.

Look closely at that picture. We look a little red, don't we? It was windy too. And look at my brother  Mr. Whitey "Two Gloves". "Yeah", as he likes to say, "two gloves and three layers of clothing."

The guy's a wuss I tell ya.

This year maybe we'll wait until May or June (see what I just did there?) before we hit the links.

Speaking of links, swing on over to Nicky and Mike's place at We Work for Cheese where you may or may not check out the links of the rest of the club.

Hey, at least it wasn't this bad!

Mayor June? Is she the mayor of the golf course?

Now that was quite clever. Well done, sir, well done. But what's this Celsius stuff?
nonamedufus said…
It's Canadian, eh? 32F for you American types. When are you guys gonna get with the rest of the world. Metric's all the rage these days.

You may or may not be the winner today!

You went golfing in 0 degrees Celcius? You would make a great Finn.
nonamedufus said…
I can see how it could go either way.
nonamedufus said…
Believe me it didn't take us long to Finnish. (and you thought the donkey was the worst joke ever?)
Ziva said…
You never disappoint. ;)

I am always astounded by the bravery and strength of the male gender. Now, I didn't say brilliance, but don't let that hurt your feelings.
nonamedufus said…
What? We have to stop and think, too? And 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
nonamedufus said…
Well, I try. Hee Haw!

I love that you and your brother do things together. Not many siblings would go along with going out in the cold...birthday or not.

Very clever, mon ami! Very clever, indeed. I've been to the driving range a couple of times during the summer with Jepeto. I totally suck at it. I can't even imagine playing while freezing my ass off.
nonamedufus said…
Well it was kinda special. It was my 60th.

I swing more. It raises my score but it keeps me warm.

Some golfers will suffer all kinds of conditions to golf. That last picture reminds me of a couple friends of ours. A few years ago they were golfing in the snow. They showed us pictures where the golf ball was more like a snowball.
Indigo Roth said…
Hey Dufus! Oooooooh, a pox on you and your puns! Tho belated 60th, Sir! Indigo
nonamedufus said…
I'm totally up for that, although I'd worry about freezing my balls.
nonamedufus said…
A pox? You'd actually wish a pox on me? I thought you were my friend.
That reminds me of some of our hiking outings in the snow where your nose starts running and then it all freezes on your face. "For the love of what you love..."

I tried golfing once... LOVED it. A bunch of us at work played in a tournament with our boss... he was the only one who had golfed before. Guess what! WE GOT THE HIGHEST SCORE! WOOT!
Nonamedufus said…
Um, Katherine? The idea is to get the lowest score. Yeah.

I've golfed four times, but it was always warm. Frustrating, and warm. I cannot imagine being frustrated and cold.

You and your brother look like you might still be up for causing a little trouble. Am I right? It took me about three reads before I found the May...or. Gosh, I'm getting slow.
nonamedufus said…
Frustrated and cold? I think Whitey would tell you that's redundant, Mike.
nonamedufus said…
You're very observant, Malisa. We have a third brother and when the three of us get together, watch out.

Simply brilliant. I'm impressed by the lengths you've gone to in order to contort your way back to the writing prompt. You and your brother look like you were having a good time. Here's to many more years of fun and family. :)
nonamedufus said…
We were pretty contorted playing golf that day, too.

Cute. I applaud your total disregard for the specific wording of the prompt. :)

(Sorry...just catching up reading all the blogs and commenting. Better late than never I guess.)

I'd rather you drop by late than not at all. This isn't the first time I've disregarded the specific wording of the prompt. And you can be sure it won't be the last.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy! ...

Hello Goodbye

Today a bit of a reflective piece. Rather than being funny, this is  about the funny. It's a day of mixed emotion at nonamedufus . You see, after several months of inactivity I've dropped a couple of former blogger buddies off my blog roll. I kept hanging on and hanging on hoping they'd return to active blogging but, alas, after waiting in one case five months I've decided to let them go. I'm going to miss - going to? I have been missing - Margo at the Screaming Me-Me . She was one funny lady. From time to time she and I would engage in a feud or two for several days at a time but it was all in fun both for us and, I think, for our readers. And we'd leave each other funny comments, poking fun at each other. I miss her friendship and our humorous exchanges. The other blogger I'm letting go is Chelle, The Offended Blogger . Chelle was a special lady. In addition to her own blog she created and managed Humor Bloggers Dot Com where humour bloggers like m...

The Dangling Conversation

There's a debate underway in my household between my wife and I. I say "underway" because it hasn't quite reached the "raging" stage. If you want raging, my wife (a Francophone) and I (an Anglophone) from time to time (usually in a weak moment of my own making) slip into our number one discussion around why we don't speak more French at home - ergo - when am I, a former public servant who learned French at the expense of our gracious taxpayers and was technically rated bilingual (even though I hardly used it), going to improve my use of Canada's other language? This one never gets resolved, hence it's ongoing nature. But the current debate is over a remark I casually made the other day. I'm no geek, but with a lot of time on my hands I surf the web, converse on Facebook and such and - I have to admit - "I'm nonamedufus and I'm a Twitterholic". In an epiphany-like moment I was struck by the apparent impact of social networkin...
