Just a Hint

Jayne over at injaynesworld has come up with a fascinating writing challenge called "hint fiction" whereby participants write a story (beginning, middle and end) that hints at a larger story but is complete within itself in 25 words or less.

This is harder than it seems. But here's my effort...

She dug the knife deep into his chest
Finally silencing the source of her discoloured skin.
She smiled - then awoke to his sickening snores.

Click on the link above and check on the efforts of the rest of the participating bloggers.

Thanks for challenging me, Jayne.

If I had a nickel for every time that happened to me, I could retire. ;-)
Well done, mon ami!

The darker side of Dufus. I knew you had it in you. ;) But you'll have to explain the "discolored skin" part. I seem to be a little dense this morning. Thanks for playing! :)

Reading between the lines, she's a battered woman and the discoloured skin is bruises.

Wow! This is very powerful and moving.

That's okay, Jayne. We all have those days.

Well, thank you. This is usually a humour blog. So this was a bit of a stretch for me.

Yes, powerful. Sadly, I've had to hide discolored skin before.
nonamedufus said…
Oh, my, that's tragic, Britton. I hope this didn't drag up bad memories for you. Sorry.

How kind of you. No...I'm decades beyond this, and I used it as a learning experience and moved on. Thanks for caring. :)

Good to know. We learn from our mistakes, huh?

To say this is really well done is an understatement. You managed to capture the essence of domestic violence perfectly.

The challenge was tough and I have no idea were the subject matter came from but I was pleased with the finished product, although it's not a funny topic to say the least.
Ah, to sleep, perchance to dream...
nonamedufus said…
A nightmare, perhaps.

Very nicely told!

Ah, bummer. I was rooting for her!

Sad but sometimes that's the way it goes.

She can always try again tomorrow.

You are quite the optimist, Nora.

It's one of my finer qualities.

It's a good quality to have.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D
