Thanks

It's Thanksgiving in Canada, eh? Yeah, yeah, I know you Americans celebrate it in November, with extra football games - damn you lucky Americans. But, you know us Canadians. We always have to be first. That's why we celebrate it today. To piss you Americans off.

You know I wasn't going to write a post today. I was going to take the day off and and run last year's Thanksgiving day post. Then I realized I did that last year and this would have been the third year in a row I'd run that bloody thing. By now I think you would have been tired of hearing about Martin Frobisher's role in Canadian Thanksgiving.

So how's this? I'll share with you some of the things I'm thankful for.

Obvious but not taken for granted:

Loving wife. Check.

Great kids. Check.

Fabulous grandkids. Check.

Good friends. Check.

Oh, and my brothers Whitey and A Touch of Grey for getting together for a great weekend of golf and a wee bit of libation.

Not so obvious but taken for granted:

Mexicans and their beer. (See last entry above.)

Cancellation of The Playboy Club after three episodes. Check.

The return of Empire Boardwalk on HBO. Check.

The new John Hiatt and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings CDs. Check.

Totally unexpected:

Fellow bloggers, such as:

Bahama Mama 00dozo's uncanny ability to avoid tropical storms.

Nicky from Nicky & Mike's We Work For Cheese for all the fun we had dissing each other recently in the Tribal Blogs Extreme Blog Makeover Contest a few weeks back. We both lost...but in grand style.

Michael Whiteman-Jones - the Will Rogers of our generation - from Too Many Mornings for his friendship and sense of humour, his extremely well written but far too infrequent blog posts, and for engaging with me in our hit-and-run comment thread hijackings over on Facebook.

Jennifer Brown, owner of Tribal Blogs, who has created a great place for bloggers to hang out.

Fellow cancer survivor Quirkyloon's ongoing good health and good humour.

The ability of Unfinished Person to laugh along with his fellow Fantasy Football managers when they kid about him not having a TV on which to watch NFL games. One colleague indicated he relied on smoke signals to obtain game developments.

And there are others, far too many to mention. Just check out my Blog Roll.

And you, my faithful blog readers, commenters and visitors.

So these are some of the things - a bit of a mixed bag - for which I give thanks today.

Oh, yes. Let's not forget that huge turkey dinner and last but not least the guy who invented those pants with the expandable waist band.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well thank you for the shout-out.

It goes without saying that I'm thankful for ye too! *smile*

And your blog.

It's always a fun read. ALWAYS.

So thank-you Dufus for sharing your humor or is that humour (you Canadians...so weird heh heh) with us.

Happy Thanksgiving Dufus!
Agree with all of them and not just the one about me, but most especially the one about Michael Whiteman-Jones. We need to see more of his posts on his blog...and not those spam ones either :).

Thank you, Dufus, for the mention. But more importantly, for the laughs, the support, the encouragement and the friendship. Enjoy your day with family, friends and a big-ass turkey! :-)

Will Rogers is dead, so I'm not entirely sure how I feel about being like him, but thank you, NoName. And Happy Thanksgiving. You should add one more thing to your list: being thankful America hasn't taken over Canada yet. We want to -- it's the oil and the poutine, mainly -- but we're afraid England will get mad at us.

But I really enjoyed those posts about acne and running shoes.

Pass the turkey, Quirky.

Thanks, Nicky. We had a great weekend with my brothers. Great weather for golfing, not at all like a Thanksgiving weekend. But that big-ass turkey remark about my sister-in-law really wasn't necessary.

Okay, how about Roy Rogers, then?

Well, here I am, late as usual but I finally reach (is there any turkey left??). Ironically(?), there was a tropical system over our area all weekend that, thankfully, didn't turn into a storm.

Thanks, dufus! I am honoured. And I am grateful that you were around when I first started my blog.

Don't know if there's any turkey left but after a weekend golfing with my brothers there's definitely no Corona left. Hope you had a great Columbus Day. Oh wait. You're in the Bahamas. Did you have any kind of a holiday Monday? Reprieve From Tropical Storm Day,maybe?

Heh, heh. Your "Tropical Storm Day" would have to fall on December 1st as hurricane season ends on November 30th, even though we did have a hurricane in December one year.

What was originally "Columbus Day" here was renamed, "Discovery Day" and - unbeknownst to me up until minutes ago - is now named, "National Heroes' Day", falls on the 12th of October and is a national holiday. Officially, the date remains the 12th, but the government has pushed the holiday to Friday this year to make it a long weekend. So, I guess it can be considered the Bahamian thanksgiving.

As for the turkey, I don't particularly care for it but me moms loves it, so I have to make it once a year. Do you know how hard it is to find a turkey small enough for two people??

;-)

Haven't you heard of leftovers?! Cold turkey. Turkey sandwiches, turkey soup, turkey salad. Man, there's nothing like turkey leftovers.

This was really a lovely post! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! And as a Mexican woman, I appreciate the shout out to my people and our beer!

Hey, I think my brothers and I have a heavy investment in that Mexican beer company. We must almost own it by now.

Wait a second ... I'm Mexican?
nonamedufus said…
Oh, damn. Didn't Mom and Dad tell you? You're adopted. Your biological father was a Mexican brewer.

Wow I didn't know that Canada celebrated Thanksgiving in October. Learn something new everyday :)

I am LOBO's wife :)

Yep. The second Monday of October. That way we can digest the turkey before Christmas.

Welcome Mrs. Lobo. Sorry he's not here right now. There must be football game on somewhere.

Yeah he really loves that fooseball :)

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D

My Back Pages - November

I know, I know, I know I should have reported in before now. But sometimes real life just gets in the way. I attempted 5 books in November. I say attempted because I slapped a big DNF (did not finish) on Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. I just can't seem to get into this guy. It's the second or third of his I've given up on, Not so the other four, starting with a biography of Stephen Stills called Change Partners. This followed by a hilarious biography of the guy responsible for National Lampoon called A Stupid and Futile Gesture - How Doug Kenney and National Lampoon Changed Comedy Forever. I ended the month reading yet another biography, this one of the man behind Rolling Stone magazine,. It was called Sticky Fingers: The Life and Times of Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine. A fascinating read. So last month I hit the magic number 50 I'd imagined for myself back in January. If I roll this month into my yearly total I'm at 54 books. And I still hav
