How To Catch The App Of Your Eye

The commonly held view is that Facebook is not a dating service. But if you've seen the movie The Social Network , that statement's somewhat disingenuous given the social network service's origins, or at least the original idea that someone else had that Mark Zuckerberg refined to launch his currently 600 million member internet network. However, recent developments might lead one to wonder otherwise. I read this week that a young southern California computer programmer launched a "Breakup Notifier" in February. The brainchild of 24 year old Dan Loewenherz, the Facebook app informs its users via e-mail once targeted friends change their relationship status. Man, kinda takes all the work, and fun I would imagine, out of stalking the more vulnerable among your close circle of friends. But it doesn't stop there. There's also a "Crush Notifier" where people pinpoint friends they're interested in and if that person's interested they each get a...

Facebook For Old Farts

It's a sign of too much time on my hands that I quietly cruise the tweets of Twitter and status updates of Facebook. I don't even know why I do it.  All I come across are:  - Georgina just found a magic bean on her farm - Ivan is stocking up on supplies in FrontierVille - Nancy needs treats to train her pet - Sandy scored a bajillion in Bejeweled Blitz  The names have been changed to protect the idiots…er…ah..innocent. I have the following admonition on my Facebook home page: " I don't care about your bloody farm, or your fish, or your park, or your mafia." But of course it doesn't seem to work.   Then there are the inane updates about  a 2 year-old's toothaches, being sad and having a headache, just walked my dog,  hubby's being cute again, so sad it's raining here, just gave my kitty some treats People…get a life!  Like, you think I really care.  Why are these people even my "friends"? But I'm going to get them back.  ...

iCame, iSaw, iPhone

You know the “me-generation” has reached it’s zenith – no pun intended – when their technological gadgets are named “I”. Zenith, by the way, for all you iTrivia buffs, is a former American manufacturer of televisions; the inventor of the modern remote control, and; - something for which I’ll always bow down and worship them for – they introduced HDTV to North America. Now, alas, Zenith has for some time hit it’s nadir and belongs to LG Electronics of South Korea! But, as is often the case, iDigress. The first self-indulgently named iThing was the iPod. Today the iPod comes in shuffle, nano, touch and classic. Funny, I thought iTouch was something else and if you did it enough you’d go blind. But again, iDigress. Let’s for a moment ponder over the iPod. With this device you can download music to a wallet size, virtually wafer thin device via your computer and play it back anywhere using headphones or something called a docking station. Space-age , indeed. Too bad the quality of the musi...

The Dangling Conversation

There's a debate underway in my household between my wife and I. I say "underway" because it hasn't quite reached the "raging" stage. If you want raging, my wife (a Francophone) and I (an Anglophone) from time to time (usually in a weak moment of my own making) slip into our number one discussion around why we don't speak more French at home - ergo - when am I, a former public servant who learned French at the expense of our gracious taxpayers and was technically rated bilingual (even though I hardly used it), going to improve my use of Canada's other language? This one never gets resolved, hence it's ongoing nature. But the current debate is over a remark I casually made the other day. I'm no geek, but with a lot of time on my hands I surf the web, converse on Facebook and such and - I have to admit - "I'm nonamedufus and I'm a Twitterholic". In an epiphany-like moment I was struck by the apparent impact of social networkin...
