What A Day!

It's Labour Day in Canada and the United States. A day when we observe the contributions of the working man - and woman. Usually, though, it means the final long weekend before the fall's upon us. Time for one last dip in the pool, closing down the cottage, having a BBQ, and last minute organizing the kids for school.

I'm doing some of those things and am taking the day off. I don't want to belabour (heh, heh) the point but instead of writing a post today I found a few Labour Day-related things over at Funny Jokes...

Did you hear the joke about Labor Day?
It works for me!

Father:  Do you know, most people don’t have to work today, because it’s Labor Day.
Son: If people are not working, shouldn’t we call today ‘No-Labor Day?’

One seventh of your life is spent on Monday.  However, the only person to get his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.

Monday is Labor Day, and I understand that Paris Hilton is dumping some of her boyfriends this weekend.
Paris knows the rule – you can’t sleep with whites after Labor Day.

If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end, it would probably be Labor Day Weekend.

What do you usually do on Labour Day?
As little as possible, just like every day!

How do you say “Labor day” in Russian?
Another cold and snowy day…

And here's an appropriate tune to mark Labour Day. John Lennon's Working Class Hero, performed by Green Day. Hope you're having a great Labour Day weekend.

Hilarious jokes! Unfortunately our Labour Day is called May Day and is celebrated the first of May - it would be so much better with an extra day off in the fall. Not that I'm actually working right now, but still...

And that Paris! I hope she enjoyed "wearing" all those whites!"

Ziva: We have Victoria Day in May in Canada. It's also known by it's unofficial title "Two-Four Long Weekend". That's a case of beer and people buy a lot for over this holiday weekend. We also but a lot of beer for Labour Day weekend. We just buy a lot of beer. Period.

Quirks: I knew you'd appreciate the Green Day clip. And Paris? Meh.

Pretty good jokes there. My literature teacher would have lost his mind if I had said "pretty good" or "awfully good" in front of him. This has nothing to do with your post. I just happen to think of him when I said "pretty good". Sorry, and that's no joke!

Don: Funny how those things stick with us. I had an English teacher who hated the use of the word presently as a synonym for currently. Of course I also had a teacher who thought the sun revolved around the planets. They aren't all winners, I guess.

Great post! Here in the US people have always mixed up Labor Day and Memorial Day. I wonder why more people don't mix up Labor Day and Mother's Day?

VetTech: Ha,ha. I like that one!

I'm one of the losers who actually had to work today...so I guess I really did labor on Labor Day!
I never knew until today that Canadians celebrate Labor Day. You guys are all right with me, NoName!

Nicky: Yep. we did the typically Canadian thing. A get-together with family where alcohol figures prominently. It's a good thing the weekend was 3 days - 1 day to celebrate and 2 days to recover!

Brooke Amanda: Work? Work? What's up with that?

Mike: Labor Day? We celebrate all the big ones: Groundhog Day, John Labatt's birthday, the grass getting cut, paint drying.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy!  You know what happens on Imagination D

My Back Pages - November

I know, I know, I know I should have reported in before now. But sometimes real life just gets in the way. I attempted 5 books in November. I say attempted because I slapped a big DNF (did not finish) on Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. I just can't seem to get into this guy. It's the second or third of his I've given up on, Not so the other four, starting with a biography of Stephen Stills called Change Partners. This followed by a hilarious biography of the guy responsible for National Lampoon called A Stupid and Futile Gesture - How Doug Kenney and National Lampoon Changed Comedy Forever. I ended the month reading yet another biography, this one of the man behind Rolling Stone magazine,. It was called Sticky Fingers: The Life and Times of Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine. A fascinating read. So last month I hit the magic number 50 I'd imagined for myself back in January. If I roll this month into my yearly total I'm at 54 books. And I still hav
