You're Having A Bad Decade

Oh man.

Imagine this guy.

Do you remember Daniel Powter?

Name sound famiiar?

He's a Canadian. (sorry) He calls Vernon, British Columbia home.

He had a huge hit record in 2006.

He made the rounds of all the talk shows performing his song.

It was used to bid adieu to departing American Idol contestants.

And that golden yardstick of success known as Alvin and the Chipmunks performed his song in their movie. You know what it was called? "Bad Day". Yep, and now like a self-fulfilling prophecy Daniel Powter's having a bad day.

Turns out, Billboard has named Powter as their one hit wonder...of the decade. Yeah. Not of the year. Of the freakin' decade!

What a downer. Well he only has himself to blame. Take a look at the song's chorus:

Because you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Powter, on a good day.

Oh, man. Talk about a bummer. No wonder he's a one hit wonder. There's just no topping that in terms of despair and depression.

Daniel Powter. Remember that name. He not only had a hit with (You Had A) Bad Day. But he has the dubious distinction of turning a Bad Day into a bad decade!

That's one more hit than I've had.

So his decade is turning out better than mine.

Moooooog: Awww.. So you're having 3,650 bad days?

There were a lot of his type...one hitters. Seems like the 60's and 70's surely had their share. Imagine that your only claim to fame is one lousy song and singing karaoke in some sleaze bar on Tuesday nights and singing that same lousy song over and over. Just shoot me!

I always hated that song. Still do. So he's still "bad" in my book and will be for a long, long time. Or until the zombies arrive.

Don: But how ironic a song called Bad Day would be voted one hot wonder of a DECADE. Now that sucks!

Quirks: Yeah, he might have done better with Good Day, although I guess the super optimistic songs have been done already, Sunshine.

What a buzz kill to have your one and only hit covered by Alvin and the Chipmunks. Hopefully he made out with the royalties.

Yeah, he's having a bad day all the way to the bank, I'll bet. The royalties from American Idol and the Chipmunks alone probably made the dude a millionaire.

Me-Me: Me, I want a hula-hoop.

Knucklehead: Yeah, but the guy's severely tainted. I mean loser of the decade? It'll take a "Yesterday" to come back from that!

I actually liked this song. Sucks for him though!

Christiejolu: I think his next song's gonna be called "It Sucks To Be Me".
I think me and Powter could be best friends. Or brothers from different mothers. Or honorary members of the Life's Loser Club. Or whatever. Nobody cares, actually.

Mike: I take it you had a bad day? ...or two?

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy! ...

Hello Goodbye

Today a bit of a reflective piece. Rather than being funny, this is  about the funny. It's a day of mixed emotion at nonamedufus . You see, after several months of inactivity I've dropped a couple of former blogger buddies off my blog roll. I kept hanging on and hanging on hoping they'd return to active blogging but, alas, after waiting in one case five months I've decided to let them go. I'm going to miss - going to? I have been missing - Margo at the Screaming Me-Me . She was one funny lady. From time to time she and I would engage in a feud or two for several days at a time but it was all in fun both for us and, I think, for our readers. And we'd leave each other funny comments, poking fun at each other. I miss her friendship and our humorous exchanges. The other blogger I'm letting go is Chelle, The Offended Blogger . Chelle was a special lady. In addition to her own blog she created and managed Humor Bloggers Dot Com where humour bloggers like m...

The Dangling Conversation

There's a debate underway in my household between my wife and I. I say "underway" because it hasn't quite reached the "raging" stage. If you want raging, my wife (a Francophone) and I (an Anglophone) from time to time (usually in a weak moment of my own making) slip into our number one discussion around why we don't speak more French at home - ergo - when am I, a former public servant who learned French at the expense of our gracious taxpayers and was technically rated bilingual (even though I hardly used it), going to improve my use of Canada's other language? This one never gets resolved, hence it's ongoing nature. But the current debate is over a remark I casually made the other day. I'm no geek, but with a lot of time on my hands I surf the web, converse on Facebook and such and - I have to admit - "I'm nonamedufus and I'm a Twitterholic". In an epiphany-like moment I was struck by the apparent impact of social networkin...
