Blog Action Day

Today is Blog Action Day. This year's topic is water and the aim is to encourage bloggers from around the world to raise awareness about clean water by posting something about it. I posted a Blog Action Day badge in my right hand column several weeks back. I hope you guys have been clicking on it.

Many of us take clean water for granted. It comes out of our taps and we drink it and out of our shower heads and we bathe in it. Most of us clean our clothes in washing machines and our dishes in dishwashers. And, wonder of wonders, we flush our toilet and the little piece of work we deposited there disappears.

Here's a few things you may not have known about water:

Unsafe drinking water and lack of sanitation kills more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.

More people have access to a cell phone than to a toilet.

Every day women and children in Africa walk a combined 109 million hours to get water.

It takes 6.3 gallons of water to produce just one hamburger.

The average American uses 159 gallons of water every day - more than 15 times the average person in the developing world.

If you want to learn more about this initiative, go to Blog Action Day.

In the interim take a listen to this very appropriate classic from the Sons Of The Pioneers. These guys were way ahead of their time when it came to cool, clear water. They wrote the song in 1936! This is what country music used to be about...

All Day I Face The Barren Waste
Without The Taste Of Water, Cool Water
Old Dan And I With Throats Burned Dry
And Souls That Cry For Water, Cool, Clear, Water.

Chorus:
Keep A-Movin' Dan Don't Ya Listen To Him Dan
He's A Devil Of A Man And He Spreads The Burning Sand With Water
Dan Can You See That Big Green Tree
Where The Water's Running Free
And It's Waiting There For You And Me?

The Nights Are Cool And I'm A Fool
Each Star's A Pool Of Water, Cool Water
But With The Dawn I'll Wake And Yawn
And Carry On To Water, Cool, Clear, Water

Chorus:
Keep A-Movin' Dan Don't Ya Listen To Him Dan
He's A Devil Of A Man And He Spreads The Burning Sand With Water
Dan Can You See That Big Green Tree
Where The Water's Running Free
And It's Waiting There For You And Me?

The Shadows Sway And Seem To Say
Tonight We Pray For Water, Cool, Water
And Way Up There He'll Hear Our Prayer
And Show Us Where There's Water, Cool, Clear, Water

Chorus:
Keep A-Movin' Dan Don't Ya Listen To Him Dan
He's A Devil Of A Man And He Spreads The Burning Sand With Water
Dan Can You See That Big Green Tree
Where The Water's Running Free
And It's Waiting There For You And Me?

Dan's Feet Are Sore He's Yearning For
Just One Thing More Than Water, Cool, Water
Like Me I Guess He'd Like To Rest
Where There's No Quest For Water, Cool, Clear, Water

Chorus:
Keep A-Movin' Dan Don't Ya Listen To Him Dan
He's A Devil Of A Man And He Spreads The Burning Sand With Water
Dan Can You See That Big Green Tree
Where The Water's Running Free
And It's Waiting There For You And Me?

Hi I don't know if you've read Dr Emoto's books about water but they're fantastic. All about what water can teach you with fantastic images of snow crystals. Keep up the good work.
Water is the one thing we can't live without... and yet we waste so much of it. Love the classic music... remember it from my childhood days watching all those cowboy shows on the old black & white television with the tiny screen.

Sue: Thanks for visiting and your comment. Dr. Emoto sounds like he's worth a look.

Boom-Boom: You're so right. I remember those tiny b&w TVs and those tiny cowboys too.

Little piece of work? HA!

*grin*

Actually, this is a very thoughtful and informative post. Sometimes I think about ALL the things I take for granted: it's overwhelming!

Go! Go! H2O!

Quirks: Yeah, I figure 1 day out of 365 we can forget the funny. The lack of clean drinking water is such a serious global problem. It exists here in Canada on some native reserves.

I signed the petition and Tweeted it. Good cause, my friend. I read where the next great wars will be fought over water and not oil. Scary stuff.

Great, now I feel guilty about not fixing the leaky faucet in my bathroom!

Jayne: Well done, Jayne. It's a precious resource to be sure. Some Canadians are up in arms at the thought of exporting it to the U.S.!

brookeamanda: Ah-ha! That was you!

In California, I think we spend half our lives under water rationing. I've quit showering and we still use more than we should.

Linda: You know showering saves more water than having a bath. True.

The Polka Dot Door

A long time ago, when I was 22, my first child was born.  That kid grew up on a little Canadian kid's show called Polka Dot Door, produced by the TV Ontario network.  And Dad, more often than not, sat through those shows with his little one. Nine or so years later when a brother, and a year after that when a sister came along number one son was moving on to Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.  But there was a nice overlap where his siblings picked up where he had left off with Polka Dot Door.  And Dad was right there to welcome them. So you're looking at a Polka Dot Door veteran.  The show began in 1971 and ran to 1993.  I didn't watch the full run but I did get in my fair share.  The formula was pretty simple.  A young male and female host, which seemed to change every week, sang songs, told stories, made crafts and generally did their best stimulate little brains.  The show opened as follows... Imagination Day!  Oh boy! ...

Hello Goodbye

Today a bit of a reflective piece. Rather than being funny, this is  about the funny. It's a day of mixed emotion at nonamedufus . You see, after several months of inactivity I've dropped a couple of former blogger buddies off my blog roll. I kept hanging on and hanging on hoping they'd return to active blogging but, alas, after waiting in one case five months I've decided to let them go. I'm going to miss - going to? I have been missing - Margo at the Screaming Me-Me . She was one funny lady. From time to time she and I would engage in a feud or two for several days at a time but it was all in fun both for us and, I think, for our readers. And we'd leave each other funny comments, poking fun at each other. I miss her friendship and our humorous exchanges. The other blogger I'm letting go is Chelle, The Offended Blogger . Chelle was a special lady. In addition to her own blog she created and managed Humor Bloggers Dot Com where humour bloggers like m...

The Dangling Conversation

There's a debate underway in my household between my wife and I. I say "underway" because it hasn't quite reached the "raging" stage. If you want raging, my wife (a Francophone) and I (an Anglophone) from time to time (usually in a weak moment of my own making) slip into our number one discussion around why we don't speak more French at home - ergo - when am I, a former public servant who learned French at the expense of our gracious taxpayers and was technically rated bilingual (even though I hardly used it), going to improve my use of Canada's other language? This one never gets resolved, hence it's ongoing nature. But the current debate is over a remark I casually made the other day. I'm no geek, but with a lot of time on my hands I surf the web, converse on Facebook and such and - I have to admit - "I'm nonamedufus and I'm a Twitterholic". In an epiphany-like moment I was struck by the apparent impact of social networkin...
