American Idle

Another week, another crop of crazy captions.  I've gotta commend folks.  Week in, week out our participants demonstrate their gift for vivid imaginations. Let' get to this week's whacky witticisms... Quirky got us rockin' with: David Bowie's love children band together to promote their new reality show: the Punkdashian sisters. we took the bait let loose with: Susan, Nicole and Donna (from left) anxiouly waiting backstage for the idols - the Wiggles - to arrive. Ziva shook, rattled and rolled with: Ever since Marissa decided to wear her peacock, she has single-handedly triggered more epilepsy seizures than the Teletubbies together. And, finally, Don got down with: The new Girl Scouts.  It's not just about the cookies anymore. But it was Nooter who struck a chord with his winning entry: (from the future) now in its 28th season, as american idol struggles more than ever to keep from losing audience share, producers introduce a new seg...

Early Spring, Late Treatment and Ten Years On

Around here we may still have a couple of weeks to go before spring officially arrives but for all intents and purposes it's here.  We've got double-digit temperatures, people in short sleeves, outdoor beer pubs, the skating rink on the canal closed down, and with our days filled with glowing sunshine, the snow is melting faster than water down a drain.  That's the good news. The not so good news is it feels like forever waiting for my radiation appointments.  Last week I spent some time at the hospital for tests and bloodwork.  I had a pulmonary session - blowing into a tube with graphs catching my lung strength on a computer - an EKG and a heart scan - an ultrasound, which was kinda cool.  Yesterday I was back again for a bone scan.  But still no word on a date for my radiation sessions, followed by my bone marrow transplant. By way of reminder, I have multiple myeloma, a kind of cancer that affects the bone marrow and the blood.  If you want a r...

Off The Top Of My Head

Over at Theme Thursday this week they've proposed member bloggers write about hats.  Let's see.  What do I know about hats? In the early 60s Del Shannon sang "Hats Off To Larry".  In the 70s Randy Newman rewrote the musical canon of love with "You Can Leave Your Hat On" later made popular by Joe Cocker. Would be politicians "throw their hat into the ring" when they decide to run for office.  Once there, voters discover they're often "talking through their hat". Some people go to an event called Ascot, but don't wear an ascot at all.  They wear a hat. When something unforeseen is about to happen one says "hold onto your hat", even though you may not be wearing one. And when one is successful at something, another gives them a "tip of the hat" again, even though they may not be wearing one. When you are wearing one you should remove it when you sit down to eat. In the Wild West good guys wore whit...

Pause Ponder and Punk

Ha, ha.  A little play on words in the title. Did you see that? Ok, folks.  Go for it. Leave me a caption and we'll get back to you Saturday with the winner. Meanwhile, rock on over to Mad Mad Margo at the Screaming Me-Me  (why does she always repeat herself?) where she'll challenge your caption capacity as well.

David, Goliath and Oscar

I managed to make it to midnight Sunday night without nodding off and caught every boring minute of the Oscars.  I shouldn't say boring because I did find Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin entertaining.  Despite reviews I saw to the contrary, I found them funny with lines like: Martin: "Oh, Look, there's that damn Helen Mirren." Baldwin: "That's Dame Helen Mirren."  But they couldn't save the broadcast.  In the end it was The Hurt Locker that did that, winning six Oscars including best director and picture - a David going up against the Goliath Avatar . I'll confine my criticism of the broadcast to two things.  First, what was up with a dance interpretation of the musical scores?  The dances had nothing to do with movies.  The producers could have given the time from the dance number to the poor guy that got Kanye-d by that woman when he tried to deliver his thank you speech for short documentary.  She was a former producer of the film appare...

Looking For A Political Alternative?

I was over visiting fellow blogger  injaynesworld last week when I stumbled across her article about the Coffee Party.  At first I thought it was a joke.  You know something Jon Stewart or David Letterman would come up with.  But no, turns out this is a real political alternative to the Tea Party. The Tea Party, in case you've been eating your cocoa beans before you grind and brew them, according to it's website  calls it's membership "patriots" and says it's core values are: fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government and free markets. High profile patriots include Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck.  Uh-huh. Meanwhile, over at the Coffee Party website  "democracy is sacrosanct".  And there are... "No lobbyists here.  No pundits.  And no hyper-partisan strategists calling the shots..." Now, what you may not have known is a few other alternatives have sprung up.  Oh, yeah.  And as a public service, I'm goin...

Paws, Ponder and Pun

There were a lot of good captions this week.  It was hard to narrow the submissions down.  Thanks to all who played along. Moooooog had me chuckling with: Look at the crazy guy wearing a purple shirt. Ziva had a good one with: E.T. knew he was different when he hit puberty and all the girls ever wanted to do was phone home. Skye had a zinger with: Look what happened to me.  She said it was Love Potion #9.  How am I supposed to get any lovin' looking like this? But it was Mike at Too Many Mornings who came through with this week's winner: The more Jenny talked to Zorax, the more he seemed out of this world. Congrats, Mike.  You be hangin' with the dufus this week.  Well done!

The Games of the 2010 Beer Olympiad - I Am Canadian

What?  Beer drinking athletes?  C'mon, Canadians play sports.  Canadians drink beer.  And Canadians win medals!  Get over it. During the Olympics all hell broke loose the night the Canadian women's hockey team took the gold medal in a match versus the USA.  Not because they won.  No.  Because after the game, long after the fans had left, some of them snuck back out onto the ice to finish their dressing-room beers, smoke a cigar and engage in some personal picture-taking.  But some sports writer - with a camera of his own - caught the moment for posterity and shared it with Associated Press for all the world to see.  The women's hockey team is a class act.  And who can blame them for celebrating such a significant accomplishment. Canadian Jan Montgomery won a gold medal hurtling head first down a tube of ice in the men's skeleton event.  Long after his win as he walked among the crowd, someone handed him a jug of beer. ...

The Irish Art Of Dicky-Doo

One day while hiking through Ireland I got lost in a wooded glen But I saw something I've not seen since Nor had I up to then. I'd stumbled upon thousands of lephrechauns Heads bent low to their task Except for every now and then One or two would sip from a whiskey flask. They'd split themselves into little groups, For them what other kind, And each was busy hard at work On something they'd been assigned. One group was unrolling bolts of cloth Yards of soft green silk And some were sewing fancy shirts And others scarves and skirts. Yet another group had various tartans And were making kilts And they'd check and double-check their work With their heads gave little tilts. But tailoring wasn't the the only task The leprechauns weren't just making frocks I viewed many a different activity As I spied from behind where I hid, my rock. Another group was cooking something And I strained to get a better look Oh but from the aroma I could tell A huge cauldron...

Pause Ponder and Pun

There's always one at every party! Leave your caption.  We'll see which one is out of this world when we check back Saturday. Meanwhile, drag your knuckles on over to Mad Mad Margo and see what goodie she has for you to caption over there.  Good luck.

Super Heroes, Super Tights

When I was growing up in the 50s my parents were firm believers in the maxim "children should be seen and not heard".  That's why they didn't mind if I plopped myself down in front of that black and white picture-producing device in the corner of the living room.  And boy what a world I escaped to.  The Cisco Kid, Circus Boy and - my favourite - Adventures of Superman.  I suppose the attraction with the latter was the fellow could fly.  And I'd never seen a guy in tights before.  The poor guy had to fly around with his underwear on the outside of his pants. Odd. In later years, in the 60s, I got hooked on Batman.  Like Superman, they belonged to the fraternal order of men in tights.  But - and this was new - they also had female villains...who wore tights; Julie Newmar and Eartha Kit each taking a turn as Cat Woman, a villain torn between loving Batman and wanting to kill him. They kind of reminded me of Elly May of the Beverly Hillbillies...

Former Presidents Should Be Seen And Not Heard

There's an old proverb that goes "children should be seen and not heard".   At a breakfast Friday, with former White House staff, George Bush, of all people indicated the same should hold true for former presidents. It seems he wasn't too pleased when former President Jimmy Carter gave him grief about his administration's position on the torture of terror suspects. As for his own role in his post-president years, Bush told his former staffers: "I have no desire to see myself on television.   I don't want to be on a panel of formers instructing the  currents what to do.  I'm trying to regain a sense of  anonymity." Two points: 1. Why did he wait until now to come up with this?  He had 8 years. 2. I'm surprised he can even spell, pronounce or know the meaning of anonymity! The good old days.

Pause Ponder and Punt

There were some great captions this week.  For example Don demonstrated terrific punmanshp with... The Pillsbury Doughboy will be sure to knead the team into a cohesive unit. Ziva demonstrated her hunger to win with... They knew little Jimmy had an eating problem when the football went missing mid-game. And our good buddy Moooooog gave us something to Cheers about Kirstey Alley plays football?!?! But Mad Mad Margo has the week's winner... Clearly a case of dunlap disease...his belly done lapped over the top of his pants. Way to go Margo.  You be hangin' with the Dufus.  Uh, keep your germs to yourself.

Ode To The Flu

My apologies if this post is late I'm contending with something I hate No matter what I've tried to do I can't get rid of this blasted flu I've aching bones, a pounding head I'd rather just stay in bed My ears are plugged, can't hear a thing Even when the telephone rings How many boxes of tissues I've used? Countless, my poor nostrils are abused And I blow and blow but all for naught Because I've an endless supply of snot.

Message In A Bottle

We often read fictionalized accounts, or watch poignant movie portrayals, of someone stranded on a desert isle who drops a message in a bottle in the hopes of getting rescued.  Why didn't they think of that on TV's Lost?  They may have gotten off that bloody island by now.  Or on Gilligan's Island. I don't think they ever thought of a simple message in a bottle in the three seasons they were on television.  Three seasons?  It was supposed to be a three hour tour...a three hour tour.  Add on Gilligan's decades of syndication and that little sucker wasn't a clueless bumbling nincompoop for 3 hours or 3 years.  He showed us how dumb he was for close to 30 years.  It also perpetrated the age old question, "Ginger or Mary Ann?" I wonder if Sting was thinking of Ginger and Mary Ann when he wrote his Message in a Bottle in 1979.  Formed in 1977, The Police were known for the reggae-influence in their music.  This song is from their second a...

Heavy Hitting Caption Contest

Back to sports this week for our captioning perspiration, er, um, inspiration.  Must be the Olympic influence. So kick this pic around and let's see who can score a winning caption. And don't forget to rush over to The Screaming Me-Me , where hopefully Mad Mad Margo has gotten over her flu and has one of her funny pics to huddle over. See you Saturday with the results.

The Most Miserable City in the United States

Poor Cleveland.  Who knew it sucks to be Cleveland?  The Mission Statement from the city's web page states: We are committed to improving the quality of life in the City of Cleveland  by strengthening our neighborhoods, delivering superior services,  embracing the diversity of our citizens,  and making Cleveland a desirable, safe city in which to live, work, raise a family,  shop, study, play and grow old. Not the most thrilling look at the future.  It's kind of like they knew there was a thing or two wrong with the old home town. But the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is there.  Drew Carey is from Cleveland.  Lebron James and Shaq play for their basketball team.  And, my favourite Christmas movie, A Christmas Story , was filmed there. But apparently none of that's good enough for Forbes.com.  They've conducted a poll that rates Cleveland the most miserable city in the United States. What were the key things that propelled Cl...
